Before applying for the adapter, users should be sure to register their Xbox One S console, original Xbox One Console, and Kinect Sensor. You'll need to copy the serial number for all three devices and register each at https://devicesupport.microsoft.com/en-US/Device/RegisterDevice. 3. Once all three devices are registered, contact Microsoft Support at this address, keeping your serial numbers handy: From there, using your resitered device info, you'll be able to request your adapter. 4. With the company's focus on motion controls quickly diverging elsewhere, users will need a separate adapter to use the Kinect sensor on the console. Updated November 28, 2017: The free Kinect adapter deal has now ended for Xbox One S. Instead, users can purchase a Kinect adapter from the Microsoft Store or Amazon. The Kinect sensor no longer ships with the latest Xbox One units, however, can be purchased separately from a number of retailers. If registered prior to the call, the Xbox supervisor can quickly pull the serial numbers from your Microsoft account. Are you planning to pick up a free Kinect adapter for the Xbox One S? Let us know in the comments! Microsoft Discontinues Kinect Adapter for Xbox One S & X. Microsoft has confirmed to Polygon that it has ended production of the Kinect Adapter - the USB accessory required to connect the motion sensor to the Xbox One S, Xbox One X, and Windows devices - stating that it is refocusing attention on "higher fan-requested gaming accessories". Back in October 2017, Microsoft announced it had ended production of the core Kinect accessory. At the time, Microsoft stated it would continue to support Kinect users but it would appear that support is also beginning to wind down. When the Xbox One S was originally launched, it came without the proprietary port necessary to directly connect Kinect to the console; for a time after launch the adapter was offered free of charge to customers upgrading from the Xbox One to the Xbox One S but this promotion was ended in March 2017, and has never been available for the Xbox One X. Polygon notes that the accessory has actually been out of stock in several stores for some time now, leading to inflated prices on the online marketplace. It's unlikely that this will abate with the formal announcement of the accessory's discontinuation, so if you were planning on picking up an adapter but haven't yet, you may find it's a little more punishing to your wallet than you expected. Although it isn't possible to play Kinect-enabled games without the sensor, Microsoft has recently re-released several first-party Kinect games without Kinect functionality for the Xbox One X launch, implying that this has been on the cards for some time. Voice navigation is still available via headset microphone, and all commands apart from "Xbox on" will still function. For gamers who used the sensor as a webcam, Microsoft notes that support for USB webcams was added to the Xbox One in October. Gesture controls haven't been supported since November 2015. As noted previously, Microsoft are clear that although this is part of the closedown of Kinect as an accessory, the technology is still a core part of the company's future, being used in the ever-evolving Cortana and HoloLens projects. Using an Xbox One Kinect Sensor with an Xbox One S or Xbox One X console. On this page. To use your existing Xbox One Kinect Sensor with a new Xbox One S or Xbox One X console, you'll need an Xbox Kinect Adapter. This adapter lets you connect your Xbox One Kinect Sensor to the Xbox One S or Xbox One X console. Note The Xbox 360 Kinect Sensor is not compatible with Xbox One. The Kinect Sensor and Kinect Adapter ceased manufacturing in November 2017. Microsoft no longer carries inventory of the Kinect Adapter. Customers can check other retail stores for Adapter availability. An offer for people with a Kinect Sensor upgrading from Xbox One ended in March 2017. Step 1: Set up the adapter. Plug the wall plug into the power supply. Insert the round connector of the power supply into the Kinect hub. Insert the Kinect sensor cable into the Kinect hub. Insert the included USB cable into the Kinect hub. You're now ready to connect the adapter to your console. Step 2: Connect the adapter to the Xbox One S or Xbox One X console. Insert the USB 3.0 cable into the left USB port labeled "Kinect" on the back of the console. Your Kinect sensor is now ready to be set up on your console. For best practice, make sure your Kinect sensor and Kinect Adapter are not sitting directly on top of your console. On your console, open the Guide and select System . Select All settings > Kinect & devices . Select Kinect and follow the instructions to set up your sensor. There can be several causes if your Kinect sensor is not responsive or is turned off when you try to use the Kinect Adapter. Try these solutions to fix the issue: Make sure the Kinect sensor is turned on in the console settings. Go to System > All settings > Kinect & devices > Kinect . Power cycle your console. Sometimes the connection between the sensor and the console needs to be reset. To do this, hard boot the console by holding down the power button for 5 seconds until the console shuts down. Disconnect the power supply from the console, and wait 1 minute before reconnecting and restarting the console. Check the connections of the sensor and adapter to make sure each connector is firmly attached. Make sure that the Kinect sensor and adapter are not placed directly on top of the console. The adapter must be powered to pass Kinect information to the console. Check the power supply of the adapter and make sure that the LED is lit. If you still have power issues after checking the power supply, reset the Kinect Adapter power supply by unplugging it for 10 seconds and plugging it back in. If the Kinect Adapter power supply light is not lit, there's no power getting to the power supply. Try another outlet or replace your adapter, if trying another outlet doesn't work. If the power supply light is orange, this means that the adapter is in standby mode and is waiting for the console to respond. Power cycle your console again. If the power supply light is white, this means there is power, and the sensor is active. Power cycling your console should also fix an unresponsive sensor that has power. Microsoft discontinues Xbox One Kinect adapter. Good luck trying to find one for your Xbox One S or X. RIP Xbox One Kinect, 2013-2017. Samit Sarkar/Polygon. Microsoft has ended production of the Kinect Adapter, the USB accessory that is required to connect the Xbox One Kinect sensor to an Xbox One S, Xbox One X or Windows device, the company confirmed to Polygon today. “After careful consideration, we decided to stop manufacturing the Xbox Kinect Adapter to focus attention on launching new, higher fan-requested gaming accessories across Xbox One and Windows 10,” a Microsoft spokesperson said in a statement to Polygon. As for any plans to bring back the item in the future, the representative declined to discuss Microsoft’s product roadmap, but said the adapter “will no longer be available.” This appears to mark the end of support for Kinect on Xbox One. The writing was on the wall in 2016, when Microsoft launched the Xbox One S without the proprietary port necessary to hook up the Kinect directly to the console. The voice-enabled camera peripheral can be plugged into a USB port on a PC, Xbox One S or Xbox One X, but only via the Kinect Adapter. Microsoft ends free Kinect adapter promotion for Xbox One S owners. For eight months following the debut of the Xbox One S, Microsoft offered the adapter free to Kinect-owning customers who were upgrading from an Xbox One to an Xbox One S. The company shut down that promotion in March 2017, and did not bring back the offer when it launched the Xbox One X last November. When Microsoft confirmed the end of the deal to Polygon in April 2017, it noted that “the adapter is available for purchase” for $39.99. As annoying as that extra cost might have been to consumers, it meant that people at least had an option if they wanted to use a Kinect with an Xbox One S or Xbox One X. But the Kinect Adapter has now been out of stock for months at the Microsoft Store and retailers such as Amazon, Best Buy and GameStop, fueling speculation that Microsoft has discontinued the item. In fact, if you search for “Kinect” on the Microsoft Store website, the adapter doesn’t even show up in the results anymore; we were only able to access the sold-out product listing from an old link. Because the Kinect Adapter has been so hard to find lately, it’s fetching exorbitant prices on the secondary market. Third-party sellers on Amazon are charging about $300 for a new item — 7.5 times the retail price of the accessory, and more than the cost of an Xbox One S — while used adapters on eBay have gone for hundreds of dollars in recent weeks. This has produced a rash of one-star reviews on the Kinect Adapter’s out-of-stock Microsoft Store listing, with customers raging in disbelief that they have to buy the device in the first place and in frustration that they can’t do so at a reasonable cost. Kinect is officially dead. Really. Officially. It’s dead. Without a Kinect, of course, you won’t be able to play any Xbox One games that require the sensor. This is perhaps why Microsoft re-released some first-party Kinect titles with traditional controls added, including Disneyland Adventures , Rush: A Disney-Pixar Adventure and Zoo Tycoon , for the Xbox One X launch. The Xbox One dashboard hasn’t supported Kinect-based gesture controls since November 2015. Voice navigation and Cortana functionality do not require Kinect; except for “hey Cortana, Xbox on,” all commands will work with a simple headset microphone. And a Microsoft rep noted to Polygon today that the company added support for USB webcams to the Xbox One last October, enabling those cameras to be used for features such as Mixer livestreaming and Skype video chat. As for the Xbox One Kinect itself, Microsoft announced in October 2017 that it had ended production of the peripheral. At the time, the company said in a statement to Polygon that “it is not the end of the journey for the technology” because, in part, “Kinect continues to delight tens of millions of Xbox owners.” Today, however, Microsoft has fully closed the door to the possibility of new Kinect users. Correction (Jan. 3): The re-released Kinect games in question still support the peripheral, but Microsoft updated them to make them playable without Kinect. We’ve edited the article to reflect this. Xbox One's Kinect Is Really Dead Now, Basically. Microsoft discontinues the Kinect adapter that you need to use the device on newer consoles. Microsoft had big plans for its motion-sensing Xbox camera, Kinect, but things did not work out exactly as the company wanted. And now, after selling millions across its Xbox 360 and Xbox One versions, Kinect is effectively at the end of its days. Microsoft has confirmed that it is no longer producing the Kinect adapter that is needed to connect the Kinect to an Xbox One S, Xbox One X, or other Windows device. "After careful consideration, we decided to stop manufacturing the Xbox Kinect Adapter to focus attention on launching new, higher fan-requested gaming accessories across Xbox One and Windows 10," a Microsoft spokesperson said in a statement to Polygon. The representative declined to say if Microsoft would ever bring Kinect back. However, the company confirmed that the adapter "will no longer be available" to purchase. Originally launched partway through the Xbox 360's life cycle, Kinect sold millions and opened the platform to new types of games, like Dance Central. Microsoft then decided to make it a mandatory part of the Xbox One package, driving up the price of the system at launch to $500. It would later be made optional, allowing Microsoft to bring the price down and attempt to appeal to those with no interest in voice controls or motion sensors. Something else to be aware of is that Kinect voice commands work without the camera, as you can use a headset microphone. How to claim your free Kinect adapter for the Xbox One S. When the Xbox one was released we had no option but to get the Kinect so I do not see why we should have to buy the adapter for upgrading. I understand there was a time period to get it free but what about people who bought the Xbox one s after that time period, it seems like we are being punished for upgrading the console even though the money used to upgrade goes to Microsoft. As a total fan of Xbox this actually annoys me quite a bit and the price they are asking for just an adapter is absolutely nuts. 30 out of 32 people found this helpful. Far too expensive. Considering I just upgraded to a better console without functionality of my kinect this product should be much much cheaper or even free. .I bought day one xbox one and spent a ton of cash and this seems like cash strangling to me.. not impressed at all.. think I'll pass. 10 out of 10 people found this helpful. Disappointed. Missed the free offer of a connect adapter for Xbox s by 12 hours as delivery was late. Can only think that Microsoft is abandoning this feature ( Kinect) by not being able to plug directly into the new slimline console. V dissapointed wont be paying an extra £29 for the mess of cables that comes as a new Kinect lead. 11 out of 12 people found this helpful. Waste of Money. Item does not work & no option to return, will never buy physical items again direct from microsoft. Complaint pending. 10 out of 11 people found this helpful. Make me laugh and cry. I hope the person who is responsible for this huge fail, One day he will go buy a new car and the dealer will sell him without wheels. And send him to the factory to buy them. 10 out of 12 people found this helpful. I would give this zero stars if I could. Bought this silly contraption to use a kinect sensor with an Xbox one S. 1. There is clearly a design flaw with this joke of a solution to actually attach a kinect sensor to the console. Why are there so many wires? 2. The adapter does not even work. Don't waste your money buying this thing it is more headache and frustration than it is worth. I purchased one realised it was not working so had to send it back for a replacement. Had a dispute with the customer service telling me to go to another retailer and purchase one. well that was another bad experience just getting them to replace the stupid thing considering I had it for 2 days. 3. I have since had a replacement adapter and even replaced the kinect sensor and the entire console to provide myself with assurance that what I already knew was correct. Your adapter is rubbish and not fit for purpose. This whole experience has taken me over a month to try to resolve. Xbox and nonsense with it going back for a refund. NEVER AGAIN!! 4 out of 4 people found this helpful. Shouldnt have to pay more to upgrade my console. The adaptor itself is fine, but the need for it is frankly insulting. I bought two Xbox One Day One editions on the day of launch, one each for my wife and I. We spent over a thousand pounds for two consoles and a bunch of launch games. Since then we have spent massive amounts of money on over 100 games and countless peripherals and accessories. So I thought I'd take the plunge and get an Xbox One S to provide 4K TV and bluray etc. I didn't find out til I got the console home that there is no port to plug the Kinect in. I then find out that need an adaptor and I have to pay £29.99 just to carry on using my Kinect. Because MS want to save money on the hardware they remove a port I needed and then have the front to charge me for an adaptor. An adaptor I only need because I bought an original console for £430 and then gave Microsoft another £250 more to upgrade it. This is just an offensive way to treat loyal customers. 4 out of 4 people found this helpful. it should be free with xbox one S. It does work - initially did not trigger kinect on - few times needed to plug in and out in other USB ports. Still it should be free for Xbox One S users. Messy design with loads of cables and power supply. 7 out of 8 people found this helpful. MICROSOFT YOU GO TOO FAR, TOO FAR . HOW DARE YOU MICROSOFT! . you remove the Kinect port from the Xbox One S and now you charge customers £30 for an adapter to use it with the Xbox One S! This is a BAD JOKE! You really know how to make the world hate you Microsoft. This is just an another obvious example of BLATANT profiteering! . disgusting. 8 out of 8 people found this helpful. While the Kinect sensor is considered somewhat controversial by some Xbox fans, it still provides the best way to interact with your console: By voice. But getting Kinect up and running with a new Xbox One S requires a few extra steps. Here’s how it works. You’ll need two things before you can start. The first and most obvious is an Xbox One Kinect Sensor, which I will simply call “Kinect” from here on out. (That said, be sure to use the right version; the Xbox 360 Kinect sensor will not work, for example.) There are two ways that most Xbox One S owners will acquire such a thing: You have one that came with their original Xbox One purchase that they’d like to use with the new console; or you can simply buy one for about $90. (This and some other links here are affiliate links.) Second, you’re going to need an adapter. Unlike the original Xbox One, the Xbox One S does not come with a proprietary Kinect port, so you can’t simply plug the peripheral into your new console. Microsoft currently sells a Kinect Adapter for Windows that costs about $50. And in September, Microsoft will begin shipping a cheaper ($40) Xbox Kinect Adapter for Xbox One S and Windows 10 PC adapter that looks like exactly the same part. So if you can wait, I suppose you could save $10. The adapter is a mess of wires and plugs. Speaking of waiting, you may be able to get the adapter for free: For a limited time, Microsoft is providing a free adapter to customers who have an existing Xbox One console and Xbox One Kinect Sensor, and buy an Xbox One S console, and wish to use the sensor with the new console. But you have to contact Microsoft Support via phone or, better, online chat to get it. IMPORTANT: If you wish to take advantage of this offer, you need to register all three of these devices with Microsoft online before contacting Microsoft Support, and you must have the serial number for all three devices ready, as support will ask you for this information (plus your shipping information). If you do take advantage of the free adapter offer, be prepared to wait about 10 days for it arrive. I did go through this process, and it was time consuming and a bit irritating, but armed with all three serial numbers, I was able to get through it. Make the connection. Once you’ve got all the pieces in place—the Xbox One S console, the Kinect, and the Kinect adapter—you can put it all together. The Kinect adapter is a mess of wires and plugs, but it’s obvious enough that most will be able to string it all together without needing instructions. And the wires are long enough that you shouldn’t have any trouble getting to connected to the Kinect, the console, and power. IMPORTANT: There is one gotcha with the physical connection: The adapter must be plugged into a specific USB port. As you may know, there are three USB ports on Xbox One S, one on the front and two on the back. The Kinect-compatible port is the one next to the HDMI-In port. Microsoft says this port is labeled “Kinect,” but that is not the case on my console. If you do plug Kinect into the wrong port, no worries: You’ll be prompted to move it. You can plug in Kinect while your console is on, it doesn’t matter either way. But when you do plug it in, nothing happens. So you’ll need to visit a few places in Settings to get up and running. Configure Kinect and Cortana. To configure Kinect, navigate to Settings, Kinect & Devices, and then select Kinect. Kinect settings appears. Here, you configure a few basic and obvious settings. But you can also calibrate your Kinect, which is probably a good idea since it’s new to this console no matter how you obtained it. Xbox will actually prompt you to do this, but you can trigger the calibration manually by selecting “I moved my Kinect sensor or I’m having trouble with Kinect” in Kinect settings. Or, if you just intend to use Kinect’s voice functionality—as I do—just select “Kinect doesn’t hear me.” In both cases, a wizard will guide you through the process of calibrating your Kinect, either completely (the first option) or for audio only (the latter). Next, you should choose between Cortana- and Xbox-style voice commands. (Sadly, you can’t use both.) Cortana is new to Xbox One with the August Update, as you may know, and it integrates with the Cortana cloud services and the Cortana apps you may use elsewhere in Windows 10 or your phone. That said, Cortana is much slower than the standard Xbox commands—mostly because it’s much more ponderous to say, “Hey, Cortana” than “Xbox”—so you have a decision to make. I’ll examine Cortana usage on Xbox One S in the future. For now, however, let’s look at the new Cortana settings, which can be found in Settings, System, Cortana. The most important option here is “Cortana can give you suggestions, ideas, reminders, alerts and more.” It’s selected by default, which means that your Xbox One S is using Cortana rather than Xbox-style voice commands. If you turn this option off, however, you’ll be prompted about disabling Cortana and will need to restart the console. After the restart, “Xbox” voice commands—“Xbox, home,” “Xbox, record that” and so on—will work as before. If you do leave Cortana on, there’s a whole world of new capabilities to explore. And while I’ll be saving most of that for future articles, here are two items to get you started. First, Cortana works on Xbox One S much like it does on your Windows 10 PC or phone, and it even presents the same vertical user interface, in this case on the right side of the screen, as its non-console counterparts. You can even view and edit your notebook, and perform other maintenance tasks. Second, when you use Cortana with Xbox One, there’s a handy “Kinect mic for chat” toggle right in the Xbox Guide flyout panel: This lets you toggle the Kinect mic on and off on the fly, and it good to know about if you don’t intend other gamers to hear your mumbling, swearing, and singing to yourself while you compete against them online. Note: It’s also worth mentioning that you don’t need a Kinect to use Cortana on Xbox One: You can use a controller-based microphone as well. That’s OK for gamers, but Kinect is the way to go for anyone who intends to control their console by voice in the living room. I’ll have more about Cortana on Xbox One S in the weeks ahead.
