Do downloads continue when the system is powered off?
So does the system download items even when its not turned on?? I've just purchased the MCC and want to know if I need to keep the thing on (with the white Xbox logo on) or if its ok to turn the system off and it'll continue downloading?
I'm positive that when I bought Metro Last Light redux through the website I never actually turned my Xbox One on to start a download and yet its available to play.
Yeah, they do. I think as long as the power brick glows white the system is in standby and will download anything in your queue.
Ya the system doesn't have any other option but off. But it doesn't actually turn off unless you hold the power button down for a few seconds on the console itself. Using the controller off just puts it in sleep mode. And just taping the button on the console does the same. And it continues all network functions during this. And if you leave it in this state for 30 days it then fully powers down.
I just tried checking this recently with Advanced Warfare, and yes it does. I was at 69% when the I turned it off, and it was up and running in the morning.
Seems to be working, but it also seems to be losing percentages? My download just dropped from 48% to 40% for some reason?
I bought the new elder scrolls game two nights ago and it's only at 20%. Any suggestions?
Well, as others have said, it goes into a standby mode. However, you can turn that off in options if you are like me and want it to power all the way off. I was having issues with it acting strange from time to time with not powering it all the way off. Games that were still running would freeze up and stuff.
Oh this is an old thread. nevermind ;/. If your game is stuck at 20% downloading try canceling it and redownloading it. Or ur internet is just terrible. I have bad internet but games can easily finish downloading overnight.
Microsoft's Xbox One Standby Mode is an Energy Drainer.
The Standby Mode on Microsoft's Xbox One Console may be costing Americans a lot of money.
"Even when it looks like your Xbox One is off, it's still drawing significant amounts of power continuously waiting for you to say 'Xbox on' around-the-clock--including when you're sound asleep or your video game-loving child is at school," writes Noah Horowitz of the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC).
According to a study performed by the NRDC, the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Wii U combined produce enough energy annually to sufficiently power all of the homes in Houston for a year. Sony has since implemented fixes on the PlayStation 4 to help with energy consumption, but Horowitz claims Microsoft hasn't addressed the main culprit behind the Xbox One's power-draining nature.
"Although Microsoft reduced the power drain from its 'Instant On' mode from 18 watts to 12.5 watts, the mode is still the default when it comes out of the box and the user is not even given the option to disable it during the initial setup," he writes. "Users must go deep into the menus to do that, which few are likely to do."
It's the console's Standby Mode that accounts for almost forty percent of the console's energy consumption, the NRDC says. The Council warns that not only does this harm the environment, but it also runs consumer's energy bills higher than necessary.
In fact, Horowitz suggests the country could save $250 million annually in future energy bills in the United States.
He provides a quick walkthrough for consumers to activate the Xbox One's energy-saving mode, which can be accessed through the Power and Startup categories found in the Xbox's Settings menu.

About energy-saving and instant-on power modes.
Configure your Xbox One and Xbox One S console to use either instant-on power mode or energy-saving power mode. You’ll be prompted to select a power mode during console setup, or you can change it in console settings.
In instant-on power mode, your Xbox One or Xbox One S console is up to date and ready to use. In this mode:
Your console automatically downloads updates. Your console starts up in two seconds. You can wake the console using a voice command (where available).
To update your console automatically, select the Instant-on setting to keep your console, games, and apps up to date.
Also, your console needs to be turned off to update. You can set your console to turn off automatically after 1 or 6 hours of inactivity, or turn it off when you're not using it.
To change these settings:
Press the Xbox button to open the guide. Select Settings > All settings . Select Power mode & startup . Make sure Power mode is set to Instant-on , and: For automatic updates, select Keep my console, games & apps up to date . To turn off your console when idle, select an option under Turn off after . Your console might sound like it's on when downloading and installing updates. On the original Xbox One console, in instant-on power mode, the console power supply unit (PSU) remains on and the light on the PSU is white. You may also hear the fan in the PSU. (The Xbox One S does not have an external power supply.) Both Xbox One and Xbox One S consoles use 12 watts of power while turned off in instant-on mode.
Energy-saving.
In energy-saving power mode, your console is shut down to save energy. In this mode:
Updates aren't downloaded and installed until your console is turned on. Your console takes 45 seconds to start up. You must press the Xbox button to start the console.
On the original Xbox One console, in energy-saving mode, the PSU is in off/standby mode and the light on the PSU is orange. (The Xbox One S does not have an external power supply.)Both Xbox One and Xbox One S consoles use 0.5 watts of power while turned off in energy-saving mode.
EU Energy Consumption.
This device complies with Commission Regulation (EC) No 801/2013 and the Game Console Self-Regulatory Initiative.
Game consoles are set to power down after 60 minutes of inactivity. Automatic power-down could help save energy by reducing the amount of time the game console remains on but not in use.
The energy consumption of the console when in use is in average as follows:

How Much Does the Xbox One’s “Energy Saving” Mode Really Save?
While setting up your Xbox One, you’ll be asked whether you want to use “Instant On” mode or “Energy Saving” mode. You can also change this option at any time. We’ll show you how to calculate exactly how much Instant On mode costs in your area, so you can make an informed decision.
Instant On vs. Energy Saving Mode.
Instant On is how the Xbox One was designed to operate. It’s similar to “sleep” mode on your computer. When you use Instant On mode, the Xbox One never truly turns itself off–it just goes into a low-power state. If you have a Kinect, the Kinect will listen for you to say “Xbox On” so it can turn itself on. Even if you turn it on by pressing a button on your controller, it will resume almost instantly, within about two seconds. If you were playing a game, the game will be suspended in the background and you’ll be able to instantly start playing the game again. If you use the Xbox One’s TV abilities, this will let you quickly start watching TV without waiting for your Xbox One to boot up.
Energy Saving mode disables all these features to save power. It’s similar to turning off your computer when you’re done with it. When you turn off your Xbox One, or it automatically turns itself off because you’re not interacting with it, the Xbox One will completely shut down. If you have a Kinect, you can’t say “Xbox On” to turn the Xbox on–it’s not listening. Turn it on and it will boot up from scratch, which takes about 45 seconds. You’ll have to sit through loading screens if you want to resume a game, loading from a save file instead of immediately jumping in where you were.
In Instant On mode, the Xbox One will also download game updates, operating system updates, and other data in the background. Games will be ready to play when you turn it on. In Energy Saving mode, the Xbox One can’t automatically download anything while it’s powered off. You may have to sit there and wait for operating system updates and game updates to download and install when you want to play a game.
How Much More Electricity Does Instant On Use?
The only downside to using Instant On mode is that it uses more electricity–15 watts of power, to be exact. In Energy saving mode, the Xbox uses only 0.5 watts of power.
But how much does that power cost, anyway? It depends on the electricity rates in your area. Here’s how to calculate it.
Electricity rates are given in cents per Kilowatthour, or kWh. First, we’ll figure out how much electricity 15W is in terms of kWh. This is how much electricity an Xbox One will use in an hour, assuming it’s in Instant On mode.
Next, we multiply this by the number of hours in a day (24) and the number of days in a year (365). This shows us how many kWh Instant On mode uses over an entire year:
Multiply that number by the cost of electricity in your area to find out how much that costs. We’ll use 12.15 cents per kWh here, as that’s the average cost of electricity across the US in February 2016, according to the US Energy Information Administration. Check your electric company’s website or your electricity bill to find the rate in your area.
Now all we have to do is convert that figure to dollars by moving the decimal point over two places:
On average, it will cost $16.425 to keep an Xbox One in Instant On mode for an entire year in the USA. To get an exact number for your area, just take 131.4kWh and multiply it by your electricity rate.
Another quick calculation shows that Energy Saving mode uses 4.38kWh per year, for an average cost of $0.53 per year.
That’s a rough estimate, of course. It assumes you’re leaving your Xbox One powered off for an entire year instead of using it. Your Xbox One will use the same amount of power when it’s powered on and you’re playing games or using media apps, no matter which mode it’s in.
So, Which Should You Use?
The choice is up to you. It costs a bit more money to leave your Xbox One in Instant On mode, but it’s more convenient–it boots up faster, allows you to resume games from where you left off without any loading screens or worries about saving your game, and you won’t have to sit around and wait for your games or console to update when you want to play a game.
If you use your Xbox One frequently, it’s probably a better idea to leave it in Instant On mode. However, if you find you only use it rarely, and it sits around powered off most of the time, you can certainly save a (very) little bit of money by using Energy Saving mode.
How to Change Modes.
To change between Instant On and Energy Saving mode, power your Xbox on and press the Xbox button in the middle of your controller to go to the dashboard. Tap left on the left joystick or directional pad to open the menu bar at the left side of the screen, scroll down to the gear icon, and select “All settings.”
Head to Power & startup > Power mode & startup.
Select the “Power mode” box and choose either “Instant-on” or “Energy-saving.”
Your Xbox One will automatically use whichever mode you choose when it powers itself down automatically or when you tell it to shut down.

How to Get Download Games in the Background (While Xbox Is Off)
Downloading the bytes and bits of an entire game over the internet takes a lot longer than downloading a WikiHow article. Naturally, your Xbox needs some time to get the game, but this could slow your connection during a crucial moment in Call of Duty. To avoid this issue, you can learn to set your Xbox to download games after you turn it off.
