by Benjamin Maltbie. The story shouldn’t be a major consideration in the critique of a racing game, but story is an obvious major concern in Need for Speed: Payback ’s design. The evidence is in the promotional material. Initial hype suggested I’d be able to immerse myself in an engaging, action-packed story. Were this to be the case, I could, perhaps, forgive the lackluster gameplay. And, were the gameplay not lackluster, I could perhaps forgive the transgressions in the trite, predictable narrative. In Need for Speed: Payback , players are immediately introduced to Tyler “Ty” Morgan., Sean “Mac” McAllister, and Jessica “Jess” Miller. These are your player characters. Each represents a different style of racing. Jess functions as a getaway driver, Mac is a drifter, and Ty is a diehard racer. It’s a nice touch that each of these driving styles suit the personality of the characters. Tyler is filled with a streamlined ambition to race and race better than anyone else and, at the start of the game, it seems as though he has accomplished this; his reputation as a driver is well-known. Multiple times, he even insists that he is the “best racer.” And, as the best racer, he has secured a gig working for Marcus “The Gambler” Weir, whose thing is to make calculated, high-stakes bets. Unfortunately for him, Tyler and his crew aren’t looking to make Weir a fortune; they intend on jacking the car and are confident that they can do so. They are, after all, a well-oiled machine. But, when a character in a story starts at the top, there is only one way for them to go - down. This short scenario encapsulates the essence of the story. Need for Speed: Payback prefers the comfort of the tried and true main roads, rather than risk the perils of a detour. With EA’s story-centric marketing elevating expectations, it is hard not to feel disappointed by the final product. There are facets of the story that are well handled, certainly. See, soon after my “speedster” was replaced by a “beater,” I found myself in the seat of another “speedster,” and, then, in some sort of suburban Mom-car. I am not a “car guy” by any stretch of the imagination, but when I only have a beater to drive, I start to appreciate the “speedsters” (I assume this is something people say) I had the privilege of using in the game’s opening; my apathy is replaced by motivation which, really, just proves that you don’t know what you have until it’s gone. In this way, mechanics can be emotionally manipulative and, to Need for Speed: Payback ’s credit, there are a few cases where narrative and gameplay form a perfect marriage; it’s one of the many small things the game gets right. The upgrade system sucks, plainly and simply. Despite this, it has an enormous presence in Need for Speed: Payback . Events are effectively locked behind stats. There's a recommended level for your car and, if you aren't near it, you won't win. Sure, the system increases the game's longevity which, considering 2015’s Need for Speed , is an understandably attractive option but, as they say, length isn't everything. Now, it would be one thing if the player was only tasked with upgrading one car to some kind of super status, but that isn't how Need for Speed: Payback plays out. Racing events also require different sorts of cars, which keeps the player working laterally to upgrade a spread of different types of cars: drag, race, and drifting, for example. It doesn't really feel like progress, which is a crucial feeling to have in a game. It is technically progress, but it is such a drag. After enough cycles of racing, grinding, upgrading, time-saving shortcuts will increase in appeal. Shortcuts, so to speak, do exist. The acquisition of parts, which take the form of cards, requires the player to spend an in-game currency to purchase what are essentially loot boxes. There are also cards given as rewards for races, but it doesn’t do much to alleviate the pain. The true anodyne for tedium in Need for Speed: Payback comes in the form of microtransactions. Employing microtransactions only manages to make the system tolerable. The upgrades are so minor and lacking in direction that there's no sense of accomplishment to getting good parts; there’s no “quest” for specific parts, so to speak. You cross your fingers and hope you get a decent part but, odds are, you won't. And even if you do, there's not much of a thrill to it because, well, you didn't work for it.

Need for Speed Payback is one step forwards and two steps back for EA’s 23-year-old racing series. While Payback does fix a host of the 2015 Need for Speed reboot’s missteps, it also brushes away a lot of the stuff developer Ghost Games got right at that time. You see, Need for Speed 2015 brought with it a resurrection of the spirit of 2003 and 2004’s successful Underground games and saw the return of meaningful performance and visual customisation. Between all the hokey live-action, first-person fist-bumping it also revolved around encounters with real-world automotive icons. That’s an idea I still genuinely like. Of course, it was very short, the world was largely empty, there initially wasn’t any drag racing, and you couldn’t even pause the game in single-player. It was flawed, no doubt. Payback remedies all that latter stuff. There’s a much longer experience here – it took me around 17 hours to complete the story alone. Plus, the world is filled with extra activities and events, drag racing is included from the get-go, and yes, you can pause it. Truly a novelty. But elsewhere? Well, unfortunately, Payback has gambled and lost. You may have heard that Payback has dialled back on the pure street racing focus in favour of a self-described “action driving” experience. The reality is that racing still pads out the bulk of the driving in Payback and the new “action driving” stuff is limited to a small handful of movie-inspired sequences and Payback’s new police pursuit system. They may look exciting on the surface, but they aren’t really that demanding; unlike, say, the Stuntman games, Payback doesn’t require us to do any of the trickier stuff ourselves – the game takes over all the cool bits. We’re just driving from cutscene to cutscene. They’re well-executed, particularly how they seamlessly swap you between characters and vehicles (like the opening moments of Forza Horizon 3), but they’re completely scripted. Fast and frantic, but shallow and not worth replaying. They’re really just built to service Payback’s paper-thin story, which starts with a confounding succession of betrayals and ends without ever really going anywhere interesting. Escaping police is now a totally linear exercise, where we have to follow a set path via checkpoints within a time limit. The cop chases feel largely neutered too; escaping police is now a totally linear exercise, where we have to follow a set path via checkpoints within a time limit instead of improvising and doing something unpredictable to throw them off. Taking down cop cars in these events has a welcome enough Burnout 3 flavour to it – muscling your pursuers into spectacular slow-motion collisions with poles and parked cars is fun – but I don’t think it was worth losing proper pursuits for. No more darting down random side-streets at the last second to shake the fuzz, or parking in a dimly-lit area with the engine off, like Need for Speed 2015. There aren’t any cops around during free-roam, either; they’re only present in story missions or at certain triggers spread around the map that will initiate another linear, pre-set chase. Payback changes things up slightly in the penultimate race event, where it adds cops in the middle of an actual race, but otherwise police pursuits are basically now just time trials where the AI is trying to stop you. The cop AI seems robust enough, and they’ll work on boxing you in when they have the numbers, but I didn’t find them too dangerous. They’re supernaturally fast (as usual, standard issue Crown Vics are able to go doorhandle-to-doorhandle with seven-figure supercars) but player-controlled cars are incredibly powerful battering rams, tearing through cop cars like a bad curry through a colon. The rest of Payback is wrapped up in drifting and racing – including street, off-road, and drag. The handling model is accessible, arcade fare – long, lazy drifts are possible with a dab of brake and a bootful of throttle. That said, I’ve had more than a few events ruined by some overly hostile AI. The respawning is a bit aggressive, too. After clipping an obstacle or skirting with a steep slope I often found myself being respawned in the middle of the track after a few seconds, even though I’d instantly recovered and was already speeding off in the right direction. It’d be almost funny if the script was equipped with a single ounce of self-awareness. The events themselves are all tied to defeating themed race crews spread over the map, each of whom introduces themselves like they’re the Most Important People on Earth. It’d be almost funny if the script was equipped with a single ounce of self-awareness, but Payback treats its cast of hip young millennials and soda commercial cast-offs like they’re the coolest thing since the other side of the pillow. Unfortunately, they’re not cool, or funny. They’re not even actually likeable, to be honest. The three main player-controlled characters are the worst offenders, ranging from irksome to infuriating. The characters aren’t functionally different from each other; they’re just each tied to one or two of the five specific car classes that are different from each other. Payback splits its cars into five categories – race, off-road, drift, drag, and runner (which are used for battling cops). Cars for specific race types need to be purchased from specific dealers and can’t be used in any other race type than the one they were purchased for. It’s a bit restrictive, particularly considering the game doesn’t always necessarily play by its own rules. For instance, it makes a fuss out of communicating that ‘runner’ cars are specially-reinforced vehicles built to take on police, but then regularly throws us into cop chases in non-runner cars that seem to handle the events just as adequately. It doesn’t mind tossing drag cars into impromptu sprint races, either. I wasn’t a fan; my GT-R drag car corners like a whale on a skateboard. Toyota and Ferrari have fallen out of the game for reasons beyond EA’s control, but the mix of tuner, muscle, and exotics has otherwise improved from the already decent selection available in Need for Speed 2015. They still look nice too, particularly the weather-beaten “Derelict” cars we’re tasked with discovering around the map (think Test Drive Unlimited’s hidden wrecks, or Forza Horizon’s barn finds). The way Payback’s lighting system plays off the damaged paint and rusty panels of these derelicts is excellent. Beyond the cars, however, I found Payback less visually impressive than Need for Speed 2015 overall. Payback’s dry and dusty casino city and its outskirts make for a large, varied map (and it boasts a day/night cycle this time around) but it’s not nearly as good-looking as the grimy, reflection-packed, rain-slick asphalt of Need for Speed 2015. The segregated car divisions, I can handle; the upgrade system, I cannot. I hate it, in fact. Individual visual customisation options now need to be unlocked by performing arbitrary tasks out in the world. I get that it’s designed to get us interacting with all the new Forza Horizon-inspired jumps and speed traps, et cetera, but it’s a lot of new hoops to jump through to change your cars’ appearance where previously there were none. Much, much worse is that performance customisation has been distilled into a collectible card game. Unlike Need for Speed 2015, which allowed us to bolt on specific parts to improve performance – you know, like a normal racing game – Payback’s upgrades are controlled by what the game dubs “Speed Cards”. Payback’s many-tentacled Speed Card system is absolutely not for me. Payback’s many-tentacled Speed Card system is absolutely not for me. To make your car faster you need Speed Cards, and each vehicle your crew owns has six slots for Speed Cards (the slots ostensibly represent things like the gearbox, or the turbo, and such). You can earn a single, random Speed Card by completing a race, but at best it will only be an incremental improvement on your current Speed Card line-up. You can also buy Speed Cards for in-game cash from auto parts stores, but the cards they carry are random and rotate every 30 minutes. If you get a Speed Card you don’t want, you can turn it into a single “Part Token”. You need three Part Tokens to have one tug at the Speed Card slot machine (stay with me), which generally yields better cards than the ones you can buy à la carte from parts stores. You can also earn Part Tokens from “Base Shipments”, which are loot boxes that also contain cash and additional customisation items (like coloured tyre smoke or neons). You earn Base Shipments by racking up in-game reputation points, but there are also “Premium Shipments”, which can be bought with “Speed Points” (a second in-game currency that costs real money and seems geared only to obscure how much actual money people may be dropping on Shipments). It’s a cold, convoluted, and random system dredged up from the sloppy shores of the free-to-play mobile swamp. How is this a fun upgrade system? It doesn’t care what parts you want or how much time you have to play the game. Any time I was awarded a worthless Speed Card I felt nothing but resentment. Surely not an emotion most developers want their games to elicit? It just turns getting your head under the hood and purchasing bespoke parts for your favourite car into a wearisome grind. I couldn’t ignore this system because – with the exception of the drift and cop chase events – the AI spanked me whenever I tried to cheap out and enter certain events too far below the suggested car level. You have to acquire Speed Cards and, once you’re out of Part Tokens to pump into the vile slot machine, replaying old races is the only way to slowly push your car’s level up. Need for Speed Payback is a big, competent, and confident arcade racer but it’s really let down by its linear cop chases, its overwrought and insidious upgrade system, its dreadful dialogue, and its superficial action sequences. It feels fine and it looks flashy, but Payback really went all-in on its direct-to-DVD revenge tale and it was a bust for me. I bought this game with high hopes of it being one of the best NFS in the franchise. It is a great game, very fun and great customization options. The map is big which is always nice. But its missing a huge part of the online experience. Freeroam, not the freeroam that is currently offered where you are forced to do Speedlist races but true freeroam. Cmon EA and Ghost what happened? I am sure I'm not the only one feeling this way either. Can you guys PLEASE give us the online freeroam that we really want? You know that Forza Horizon 3 style freeroam where you can do just as much activities as you can on singleplayer? Please guys we are begging you to give us this experience, I'd love to meet up with my friends in a REAL freeroam online session and show off my custom made cars. Please please please patch in a real online freeroam. I would give it a 5 star rating if this gets done. One more thing, we needs cops on single player freeroam as well, not just in events. 54 out of 58 people found this helpful. Great Singleplayer. Game is great, at least singleplayer. It improved much more than nfs2015, but still needs some stuff back from NfsU2 and specially Most Wanted/Carbon. We asked for cops, and you gave us cops, but only in missions, not free roam. Also, talking about free roam, map is huge and diverse, but you guys took out online free roam? I hope it's because we're still in pre-release and you're planing on putting it tomorrow or the next few days. Online Free Roam in a Open World Racing Game is a must. Please don't let us down, I've had every nfs game since NFS II (1997). 39 out of 42 people found this helpful. Best NFS I've ever played! I'm 32 years old and played over 15 of the games in this franchise. By far the best and deluxe edition worth every penny! Around 82% missions done and clocked 23.5 hours so far. Can't wait for the DLCs and hopefully season-pass would be reasonably priced. 79 out of 106 people found this helpful. This is the NFS I wanted. Fun handling, cheesy story, vast customization, it reminds me of NFS from my childhood. Great fun. The critics don't know what they're talking about, visit the NFS subreddit, r/needforspeed, for some real info. 17 out of 20 people found this helpful. Pretty Damn Good. The single player is fun, I had a blast playing it and still play it today and so on. But the downside of the game is multiplayer. Can only have a race or offroad car online and u cant make a private it lobby and u should be able to use all the car classes in the game. 9 out of 11 people found this helpful. Great, But Could Be Better! The customizations and feel of the game is nice. It also features a great storyline which intrigues you to continue with the game. This is a great game, but also has major drawbacks that the developers need to look into to make it a truley fun game. Number one is the fact that the textures are still not loaded in completely when you spawn in after an event or starting the game. Number two is roaming cops and freeroam multiplayer, which would make the game a lot more fun and interesting. Lastly, and probably the one that irritates me the most is when you wreck in a race, your entire HUD, all directional arrows and checkpoints don't show until around 7 seconds after you already spawned in. I don't know if this happens to anyone else, but it does to me everytime and is extremely frustrating. However, on the good notes, another thing the developers did well was the audio for the cars. For example, the Jaguar F Type sounds incredibly amazing, especially the backfire👌👌👌 5 out of 5 people found this helpful. great job on this one, beyond better than the 2015 one, keep it up, SEE YOU IN THE STREETS. 11 out of 13 people found this helpful. beat in 23 hours and i loved ever hour of it. 18 out of 23 people found this helpful. All user reviews. OVERALL EDITORIAL. Let's start with the positives. Great graphics, awesome day/night cycle, fun races and likeable characters. Now, the negatives. First off, the speed cards absolutely ruined the game. I get it, it's about the grind but players shouldn't have to feel forced to give in to microtransactions just to advance throught the story. Second, where's the online free roam? Online competitiveness is everywhere but what about the casual players? I want to show my friends all my rides not just describe them through party chat. Third, some of the lower class rides, ie. the Dodge Charger and the Chevy Camaro, should be able to reach 399. I know a lot of players who perfer the classic american muscle over a Lamborghini or Ferrari. Finally, cop chases. They randomly appear behind you in the "Broker's" mission and give up 500 yards from the "escape point". Where's the free roam police? On vacation perhaps? 3/5. 255 out of 270 people found this helpful. Honestly after playing the game for a while and having it almost finished i have to say if there were cops in free roam and a nfs most wanted 05 type of pursuits 'd give it 4.5 out of 5. anyone complaining about the handling and tunings a complete idiot, this isnt forza its nfs an arcade racer and it nails it. The customization is the best ive seen, the card systems dumb i'd like a shop to drive to and pick my neon/tires smoke/and nos colors instead of the random cards but it still isn't bad, i haven't used real money in game and never will in a $60 game i paid enough. the drifts feel good, the drag racings fun and popping a wheelie is sick, the just need police and working traffic lights would be a nice touch for cops seeing you, impound strikes and repainting your vehicle to get your heat down would be great. 29 out of 30 people found this helpful. HATE THE CARDS. Overall I love this game. I love the arcady feel while driving and I believe that they really nailed the visual customization this time. But I can't fathom the ridiculous card performance upgrade system. get rid of it and EA would have made a NFS game that everyone would enjoy. But it seems like EA doesn't know how to make a good racing game anymore. 346 out of 418 people found this helpful. Actually not bad at all. lok this game is pretty fun and easy to pick up customization is pretty deep not underground 2 deep more like midnight club 3. Drifting is easy especially with live tuning and for you stanced and sticker nerds your covered. Theres a good amount of cars and racing is seperated into 5 categories. This game does have flaws MP has NO FREEROAM 1st there is no back on road that i found for when you stuck big issue 2nd speed cards are lame the system is good but using cards is lame come on ghost and EA this is NFS not Pokemon DERP. 3rd the music sucks like bad they really dropped the ball here and 4th is Tyler Morgan he literally is the most annoying character ever his lines, voice acting and his voice are cheesy and annoying he sounds way to young for his role. I also had to turn off cinematic crashes at first its cool but then it gets annoying. So overall it has some flaws but not enough to justify the harsh ratings it has gotten if you enjoyed NFS 2015 you will love this game👍 99 out of 119 people found this helpful. amazing cars great storyline so many customization options highly recommend for car guys like me. 34 out of 39 people found this helpful. dont listen to the morons. apparently people don't understand that unreleased games arent finished games. never once had a crash or bug, and midway through my trial an update was released proving they're paying attention to the data they get back. game was fun and addicting. upgrades can be bought and the real money purchases are mostly cosmetics. 478 out of 648 people found this helpful. The story line (plot) is good. BUT the game is ridiculous! NO car damage, except scratches to the paint. Or a warped hood when you go into bonnet view. But there isn't a driver's view, and the 3 follow cam option are all the same distance except one is what would be 1 meter higher. Which still sucks. I egree that the police chases are needed for a true NFS game, outside of the stories. And the constant resets while freeroaming is just stupid. To me, this is like Forza Horizons with a story. You can't say "It's the crew", because the crew was made after Rivals, which initiated the whole freeroam concept. I'm beyond disappointed with this game. Shame on the developers for releasing this piece of steaming Crap! 13 out of 14 people found this helpful. updated. mix of good and bad. open world has LOTS of variety with fun drifting and offroading but negatively impacted by no freeroam multiplayer or chance encounter police chases. card upgrade system is strange. like choosing parts like turbo or super chargers instead to be more realistic and less by chance. Have had no reason to purchase anything with microtransactions so not a real concern. the car renderings are good but not great. Previously pathetic car damage has become almost non existent after the latest update. horrible choice to improve performance. 190 mph collision put slight scratch and being tboned did nothing - NO FUN. The story adds decent value but has a lot of untapped potential. online races are limited in types but fun. cant find drag racing which is a shame because that and offroad are the strongest styles in this game. load time is much improved after update and theme song is painfully boring. In game radio options are pathetic and distracting. still more good than bad. 16 out of 18 people found this helpful. Not a true NFS game. The story and characters are awesome but mostly it's driving around plus there are no free roaming cops which for a NFS game is a disgrace. I liked the NFS games which had somthing for everybody like police chases and online. To be honest there isn't much replay value unless you add the free roaming police and online back. 417 out of 586 people found this helpful. it's getting better with updates. could a great game tons to do and the new abandoned cars which you steal not just find is sweet but the blatant attempt to pick gamers wallets selling f'n speed points means if you want to play u must pay $$$$$$$$$$$$$ or grind for the next five years to complete. no online play is ever available either. 39 out of 50 people found this helpful. Need for speed payback xbox one

To get a lot of money, REP, and Speed cards quickly, complete short events. Since all events give almost identical rewards regardless of the difficulty, just keep repeatedly completing the shortest events. The fastest event in the game is the "Drifting The Block" drift trial. It becomes unlocked early in the game, when you do drift trials for the first time. It is the perfect farming spot for money, REP, and Speed cards. This event can be completed in 90 seconds, and since it is a circle, you finish at the start and can instantly replay it. Each time you finish the drift trial, you will get approximately 12,000 credits (17,000 credits if you sell the Speed card), 120,000 REP, and a Speed card. You can get approximately 3,600,000 REP and 510,000 credits per hour using this method. Keep replaying the "Hyperspace Circuit" race. It becomes unlocked during the final act, at the end of the game. It gives 31,000 credits (if you sell the Speed card), 144,000 REP, and a Speed card. The event only takes three minutes to complete, including loading times and transition screens (with a fully upgraded car). It also immediately puts you back at the start of the event. You can get approximately 2,880,000 REP and 619,980 credits per hour using this method. Unlock Derelict cars. Collect the five hidden Derelict car parts for a Derelict car to unlock it. Each Derelict car requires you to have defeated a different league boss. After defeating a league boss, you will get clues for the five Derelict car part locations of a certain car. In the map menu, select the "Derelict" tab to view the clues. It shows a drawing with outlines of the streets where the Derelict parts are located. You normally would have to look at the in-game map and compare it with the drawing, but the videos below show all the Derelict part locations. The Derelict cars are special because they can be upgraded to the maximum level without the level caps normal cars have. After upgrading a Derelict car to Performance Level 300, it unlocks a Super Build for more extreme visual customization. After restoring a Derelict car, you can also choose which category you want it to be (Race, Drag, Drift, Runner, or Offroad). It is recommended you choose a different category for each unique car. None of the Derelict car parts are missable, but they will not spawn until you have defeated the corresponding league boss. Assembling one Derelict car unlocks the "One Man's Trash" achievement, and upgrading it to Performance Level 399 unlocks the "Another Man's Treasure" achievement. Chevrolet Bel Air 1955. To collect the five Derelict car parts for the Chevrolet Bel Air 1955, you must first complete the Runner quest line. Chevrolet C10 Stepside Pickup 1965. To collect the five Derelict car parts for the Chevrolet C10 Stepside Pickup 1965, you must first defeat the "Riot Club" (Big Sister) league boss (Drag quest line). Ford Mustang 1965. To collect the five Derelict car parts for the Ford Mustang 1965, you must first defeat the "La Catrina" league boss (Race quest line). Nissan Fairlady 240ZG 1971. To collect the five Derelict car parts for the Nissan Fairlady 240ZG 1971, you must first defeat the "Udo Roth" league boss (Offroad quest line). Volkswagen Beetle 1963. To collect the five Derelict car parts for the Volkswagen Beetle 1963, you must first defeat the "Shift-Lock" (The Underground Soldier) league boss (Drift quest line). Unlock Front Bumper visual customization. Drift for eight seconds to unlock the Front Bumper visual customization. Buy a drift car, and go to the airport. It is easy to drift for eight seconds on the runway at the airport. All billboard locations. Go to the indicated locations to smash through all 30 billboards and get the "Does Not Obey" achievement. Each billboard needs to be smashed through using a ramp. Most billboards do not require powerful cars to reach -- so you can get this achievement early with cars under 200 power. The 30 billboard locations are split into three sectors. They are collected from top to bottom, going through the map from left to right. All Jump locations (3 stars completion) The following video shows all 30 Jump locations completed with 3 stars. The Jumps are challenges across the map. Most of them can be completed with 3 stars early in the game with cars under 200 power. A few require a car build focused on jumping and air time. The Porsche Panamera Turbo is recommended for the harder challenges. Try to get your Air Time skill up to 9 by trading in or buying speed cards to easily complete all 3 star jumps. Getting 3 stars on "Eject Button" Jump challenge. The "Eject Button" Jump challenge is one of the hardest jumps in the game, and requires a car that is made for jumping and some practice and luck with the ramp. A good car to use is the Porsche Panamera Turbo with the Offroad build. Mainly go for jump speed cards. These will increase your airtime, and you should get it above 9 or even close to 10. The "Eject Button" Jump is especially difficult because you have to hit top speed while going against traffic and squeezing through a narrow spot to hit the ramp. This takes some practice. Easy "1500 bhp. Easy" achievement. The Koenigsegg Regera is unlocked for purchase after completing the story. Buy the "Race" version at the Race dealership, not the Drag version. Winning Drag races with the Drag version does not unlock the achievement. The Regera costs 794,205 credits. You can farm credits by replaying events and selling cars and performance upgrades you no longer need. Opening shipments is also a quick way to get credits. Play the "Midnight Run" race. It is in the Desert area in the middle of the map, and the shortest race in the game. It only takes one minute to complete. You must place first in the race without hitting any other cars, guard rails, walls, rocks, etc. to get the "1500 bhp. Easy" achievement. You are allowed to hit street signs since they do not damage your car. If you hit something other than street signs, restart the race to try again. It may take a few tries. Most importantly, try passing all opponents at the first bend in the road. The trickiest part is not hitting any opponents as they tend to drive recklessly. The sooner you take the lead, the better. You still need to drive fast though. Otherwise, your opponents will catch up to you and potentially crash into you from behind. Just practice the race a few times to get the hang of it. Easy "Driving The Incredible" achievement. First, progress to the end of Chapter 4, which is when the BMW M5 becomes available for purchase at the Drift Dealership (dealership is marked on the world map with a green icon). The BMW M5 costs 112,905 credits. Make sure to buy the M5 and not a different BMW. Only the BMW M5 works for this achievement. Next, play "The Drift King" drift trial. It is the final drift race in the game, unlocked in Chapter 4 after completing all other drift trials. It is the longest drift trial, where you can earn the most points. It may take a few tries to get 350,000 points. If you are short on points, pause the game before the finish line and select "Restart" to try again. If you are having difficulties, try upgrading the car. Your drift score is a combination of speed and drift angle. There is also a multiplier. The multiplier increases whenever you are drifting and drops when you are not (so long drifts are beneficial). However, using nitro will freeze the multiplier -- so use nitro between drifts to keep the multiplier up. Drift at every bend in the road, not just at big turns. At high speeds, even just tapping the handbrake for a split second can get you 10,000+ points on a straight road. With some practice and an upgraded BMW M5, it is not too hard to do this. Easy "Hyperspeed" achievement. To reach the top speed of 240 mph, you need to be near the end of the main story and unlock a car that can be upgraded to 399. Try using the Koenigsegg, which is quite expensive but allows you reach the 240 mph without any upgrades. There are a lot of other cars that can reach that top speed with speed upgrades. Need for speed payback xbox one

- The driving experience. You get an exhilarating feeling of speed that no other major racing game releasing in the last few years really fulfils. As you progress through the story and the cars get faster and faster, the feeling only grows. - The art and sound design is sensational. The world isn't huge, but it's varied and beautiful. From hilly, swirling offroad mountain tracks to stretching desert roads to the bright night lights of the city, it's a joy to drive through. It reminds me of The Witcher 3 in how the game is a joy to traverse, taking in the sights, not just to sprint through until the credits roll. - Brilliant sound design. The roar of the engines, the stretched 'slurp' of the nitrous and the squeal of the drift sound excellent, no more so than when they reaches a cacophony combined with police sirens chasing you at 190 mph through oncoming traffic. The soundtrack doesn't mean much for a racing game, but it's got something for everyone- a healthy smattering of grime, rap and rock, featuring Queens of the Stone Age, Vince Staples and Skepta. There are a few stinkers, but the good outweighs the bad. - The driving experience feels genuinely fresh. It's a refreshing break from the racing sims that the market is moving closer towards. Sims are great in their own regard, but often fail to capture the joy of speed, destruction and carelessness a good arcade racer revels in. - It copies the successes of its predecessors: - Cops are a challenge and fun to battle and escape for the first time in years thanks to smart. teamwork (due to well-made AI). - The customisation (the only real pro in NFS 2015) is taken in Payback with bodykits galore. (especially on the derelicts you can restore) and a wide set of decals, along with a good. community tab where you can download popular 'wraps'. - A full day and night cycle lets you have both the night gameplay people liked in Underground 1, 2. and NFS 2015, as well as the sun-baked desert and sunset. - This is a controversial opinion, but the story mode is actually alright. There are issues, but the story is, in parts, wonderfully camp, daft and fun once you get over the hurdle of its exasperating stupidity. It's quite hefty and long too, keeping me busy for at least a good 20+ hours. David Ajala does a brilliant job as Mac, the drifter and offroader of your 'crew', with a carefree joy and lovely British accent and so does Jessica Madsen as Jess- for a few lines, at least. - No cops in freeroam. Why design them so well and criminally underuse them? No cockpit camera. Particularly in Drag-type cars, the camera under nitrous boost zooms back to emphasise the speed, which is a nice effect until you notice it's difficult to see over your car at the oncoming traffic. - Cars can only be used in the racing discipline for which you buy them (Drift cars are only usable in Drift events, for example.) I could want to use by Race-type NSX for a drag race, but I'd have to spit out the 100,000 credits to buy a Drag-type one then spend around 20 minutes of farming to get it to the right level. Surely there should be a 'remodding' or transformation mechanic to switch the type of previously bought vehicles in the garage? - Minor issues with the driving experience. Cars drive almost comically different depending on their role. Race-types have steering tuned too 'tight', and this is taken further with Drag-types. In races, the reset after crash mechanic is inconsistent and buggy, once resetting me facing a wall. - When the writing fails, it fails hard. The acting is generally weak. Tyler, Lina, the racing league bosses, and, often, Jess are acted horribly, though it might be more accurate to blame the script. In particularly, the sketch to introduce Mac in the prologue criticises a 'cringy' drifting streamer called "HashTiger" physically hurt to play. Upgrading under-levelled vehicles is a chore, waiting for upgrade shops to restock and farming old events for 'Speed Cards', but the game is very liberal with resources, never pushing you to pay a penny for a microtransaction (considering they only buy you boxes containing money, vanity items and cards to 'roll' for more Speed Cards). I'll be the first person to crusade against microtransactions but this is light years away from how egregious Battlefront II or Shadow of War are. The open world is large and contains a large desert, a Las Vegas inspired city, a mountain/forest, and some canyons. There are no cops in free roam which can be considered a good thing if you don't like to be bothered, but for most people its disappointing and makes the world less interesting. You can still get into pursuits, although they have been limited to random locations around the world and missions. Worst racing game progression system ever. Worst NFS ever, despite of good handling and graphics. In the current state game should be named NFS: Refund. … Expand.
