F1 2017 for Xbox One review: Finally, a Formula One game for Xbox you'll love.
The world's premier single seater series is back on consoles for its 2017 edition with a shiny license in tow. This is now the third iteration since the series made its debut on the current generation of consoles, and as you'd expect, it's been given a healthy polish along the way.
While this isn't a perfect racing game, for fans of the F1 experience it covers every base you'd want. It's better looking and better performing than ever before. It supports HDR and will get a fancy upgrade for Xbox One X owners.
Regardless of which console you're playing on, it's a lot of fun. And it's being released on August 25.
Shiny happy people.
We're not short on great-looking racing games nowadays, and F1 2017 fits into the pack perfectly. Part of the attraction is the official license that Codemasters has, which means all the teams, drivers, and circuits are from real-life F1. Not just that, but representations of their hospitality suites, the team bosses on the pit wall, and all the likenesses are pretty spot on. If you follow F1, you'll know who you're looking at in an instant.
The tearing is bad. Really bad.
There's a real sparkle when you consider F1 2017 graphically. It's as sharp as a tack, gloriously colorful and every bit a true-to-life digital recreation. Some of the details are exciting, too, like the heat haze that radiates from the back of the car in front or the way the sunlight glistens on the tarmac.
What isn't so good is that while the graphics are beautiful, F1 2017 suffers from horrendous tearing. This seems to be a byproduct of keeping the frame rate at 60 frames per second (FPS), but it's frequent and annoying. It's also worse on some tracks than others.
There's only so much you can do with the hardware available, and Codemasters took the stance of frame rate over all else.
Strength in depth.
Career mode is once again at the heart of the single player experience, but it's not all she wrote. The basic idea of the career mode is unchanged from F1 2016, but the overall execution is certainly more complete. There's still the cheesy moments of dealing with your agent, and your engineer, and this year also includes a rich guy who wants you to drive his cars in an invitational event.
Behind the cheese, there's a ton of depth.
The behind-the-scenes aspects of the career mode are where the work has been done. There are little touches which make a difference to the immersion, like being able to now go to an agent's office or the R&D suite where you can examine all your data and speak to your chief engineer. But even this isn't what truly makes the career mode an epic experience.
All of the rules of the real-life championship now apply. That means engines, tires, gearboxes are all subject to rules on how often they can be changed. You have to get through six races with a gearbox before you can swap it out. Or you can do it early and suffer a grid penalty.
Wear transfers across these parts from race to race. That means everything your team does can affect how long your important parts work at their best. The teams further up the grid will have better engineers, but if you're driving for Sauber, you might not be as lucky.
Real-life rules on engine parts are a challenge.
Race weekends are customizable as to how much you want to do, with shorter qualifying rounds and races all down to your decisions. If you're hardcore, do a full race weekend of three practice sessions, full qualifying, and a full race distance. Or just do 25 percent, it's up to you.
Performing well is key to developing not only your reputation as a driver but also to improve the car. Meeting objectives means R&D resources to spend, and there's a huge map of things you can do to your car to make it better. One of those is beating your teammate. This benefits both you and the car, so make sure you leave them in the dust.
The closest you'll get to being behind the wheel.
The in-race experience is generally first-rate. But there are moments you'll be immensely frustrated, broken hearted, fully angry and also jubilant. Because F1 2017 is so well put together, it's incredibly immersive. If your car breaks down or you get shunted from behind by another driver, you'll be sent on a roller coaster of emotions.
F1 2017 is an emotional rollercoaster.
All those practice laps, all that fettling, all that effort to drag yourself up the grid, it's all gone in an instant. Terminal damage is terminal damage. There is no rewind. No reset.
At the same time, your on-screen companion won't be the only one punching the air when you've pulled it all together and got the "W." F1 2017 invites you to fully invest in the experience, and it'll play with your emotions throughout.
RIP my hopes and dreams of winning the Monaco GP.
Added realism comes from such staples as safety cars and virtual safety cars (not that you ever really know what's going on with those), from pit stops where your team will scurry around before your very eyes trying to get you back out there in a flash, and from manual start-line procedures.
By default, you'll be in charge of launching the car properly, and it's an important skill to master. You have to press "A" to dip the clutch, reach optimal revs and launch when the lights go green.
A bad start can, and often does, ruin your race. That's partly because the driver AI is a little aggressive at times when it comes to sticking to the racing line. Contact will also mean warnings and penalties, as does cutting the corners or exceeding track limits. You're rewarded for driving a clean race and punished if you get a little too aggressive.
Historics and other events.
If you enjoyed F1 in the days of old when the cars just had large engines and made one hell of a noise, then you're in luck in F1 2017. There are 12 historic racers to get your hands on, though one of them, the 1988 McLaren MP4/4, is exclusive to preorder customers and those buying the day-one edition. Here's what you get:
1988 McLaren MP4/4 (preorder and day-one only). 1991 McLaren MP4/6. 1998 McLaren MP4/13. 2008 McLaren MP4-23. 2006 Renault R26. 2007 Ferrari F2007. 2010 Red Bull RB6. 1992 Williams FW14B. 1996 Williams FW18. 2002 Ferrari F2002. 2004 Ferrari F2004. 1995 Ferrari 412 T2.
The historic cars can be driven on any of the circuits from the main F1 calendar, as well as the added short circuits and the night time jaunt around Monaco. If you're chasing more depth than just a single Grand Prix, there are dedicated championships for them.
Monaco in a classic F1 car is a dream.
These are also available for the modern day cars and they're a less intense way to experience a title charge without getting fully engrossed in a career. They're less involved off the track, leaving you to concentrate on what's the most fun: driving.
The bottom line on F1 2017 for Xbox One.
F1 2017 is in many ways another yearly, iterative update on a licensed franchise. Yearly updates are often hard to get excited about, but F1 2017 isn't one of those. Sure, it's not a hardcore simulator, but it's got plenty of techy tweaks to keep the motorsport nerds happy while still being approachable enough for more casual gamers.
This is definitely Codemasters' best stab yet at the F1 franchise.
It looks amazing, it handles extremely well and there's enough depth in the single player career mode to keep you going until next year's game. The addition of historic cars is a welcome bonus for fans of the sport.
It's a shame that it suffers from so much tearing. It's admirable that Codemasters wanted to keep a high frame rate going, and that much is fact. But it's hard to deny how horribly distracting they are when they come.
Everywhere else, F1 2017 is a thoroughly enjoyable, deeply engrossing experience that both fans and newcomers will enjoy.
F1 2017 should launches on Xbox One alongside PlayStation (PS4), PC and Mac on August 25 for $60.
Stunning graphics. Deep and immersive career mode. Bad-ass historic racers.
Hideous tearing. Sometimes over aggressive driver AI.

Realistic, fun, exciting, but no splitscreen.
The last F1 game I played was F1 2012 for the 360, and wow is this so much of an improvement. The graphics are stunning, the realism of the AI is wonderful, the controls and tweaks are great, and the driving itself is just fun. From what I've read, this is how Codemasters has been for the past several renditions, minus 2015. The worst part really is the lack of local splitscreen. I don't know if it's supposed to be a cash grab to get more people to buy consoles and the game or what, but it is downright ridiculous for a driving game to not support 2 player racing. Really hoping for that to come back, a big disappointment. However, the single-player and online aspects are really good. Four stars seems appropriate. Definitely worth it.

Codemasters' new best F1 game!
What a wonderful game this is! The 2017 F1 cars are as fast as they should be, and the classic cars are an absolute joy to drive! This game has an even deeper career mode than 2016, with a new R&D tree that has over 100 upgrades! You now have to replace your gearbox and engine after a certain point, or they'll become worn and unreliable, like Honda's engine for instance. And now, the classic cars are actually a part of your career mode, instead of feeling like they're just add-ons. Also, the engine sounds on the classic cars (except for the Renault R26) are pretty accurate. Now, here are the things that I don't like. Time trial is still messed up, online is WAY too glitchy and laggy, the tyres/tires on the 2017 cars are too wide, the 2017 cars sound nearly the same as the 2016 cars, and the penalty system is STILL out of wack. Overall, the game is fantastic, but still needs a few improvements. Also, STILL no split screen.

Love this series, even with the hiccups every now and then. Hours of entertainment for any racing fan. Now with classic cars making a comeback to the series, all i can say is" shut up and take my money".

Classic Car Hype.
I can't wait to drive the old cars again (especially the Renault 06 car) and maybe on old tracks.

The Best F1 Game Yet.
This game has everything that I could have wanted, other than better graphics in certain areas. But, as far as the driving goes, it is really good. Also, the classic cars are pretty cool. they definitely sound better than the current hybrids. My only wish for next year would be F2 or F3 cars (or both), since the three series' are linked together. Thanks Codemaster.

EXCELLENT JOB CODEMASTERS.
Codemasters stepped it up even more they literally outdone themselves this year but that doesn't mean it's perfect and all like they said the local splitscreen is missing there also should've been a option to turn off the wear and tear of the parts for beginners cause the upgrade tree is gonna be hard to understand especially for people new to the series there should've also been a career booster dlc like they had for last year to make things easier and less confusing for the noobs to better understand the r&d system other than that it's definitely worth the money.

patch asap.
fix penalty system,DQ glitch and blue flags and then I'm happy.

This year's entry in F1 racing game series has been announced, as has a release date and the first details.
Again developed by Codemasters, F1 2017 is headed to PS4, Xbox One, and PC (through Steam) on August 25, 2017. Alongside the news, publisher Deep Silver shared the game's first trailer, which you can watch below. It unfortunately doesn't include any actual racing, but you can get a look at a handful of F1 cars.
Codemasters and Deep Silver state that F1 2017 brings back classic F1 cars. As seen in the trailer, those include the 1988 McLaren MP4/4, 1992 Williams FW14B, and the 2002 Ferrari F2002. These won't be the only classic cars featured; there will be a total of 12, with more to be announced in the "coming weeks."
F1 2017 also expands Career mode, enhances multiplayer, and adds a new Championships mode (which was not explained in any detail).
"For the first time ever, F1 2017 fully integrates the classic experience into the main career mode," Codemasters creative director Lee Mather said in a press release. "As part of your career, you will be invited to race in modern day, invitational events in the different classic F1 cars throughout the season. We're also adding to the variety in F1 2017 with the inclusion of four alternative circuit layouts, as well as numerous new gameplay types. The classic cars will also be available to play in a range of other game modes, including online multiplayer modes and time trial."
Anyone who preorders F1 2017 (or picks up a Day One edition) will get exclusive access to the aforementioned McLaren MP4/4. The car will also be sold "at a later date" for an unspecified price, while the remaining classic cars will be available to all players.
F1 2017 Review.
In this year’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel had a real brain snap on track, pulling up alongside rival Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes and steering into him during a safety car restart. During the Russian Grand Prix, in the first year of my F1 2017 career, he’s done something similar. He’s turned into Hamilton at race pace and managed to tangle himself, Lewis, and my F1 wunderkind Jackie Speedweasel together for a date with the wall. I manage to extract my driver from the mess, grazing the wall and losing part of the front wing in the process, but Hamilton and Vettel’s cars are toast; a snarl of carbon fibre shards and loose wheels. It’s still very early days but the championship has pivoted in an instant.
This kind of split-second unpredictability is a staple of real F1 and Codemasters continues to capture it. F1 2017 is a confident and comprehensive racer that succeeds by embracing all of modern F1’s idiosyncratic rules and regulations, as well as its danger, and baking it all into a truly great sports sim. It challenges us with volatile racing but rewards consistency, patience, and strategy. It’s not the dramatic improvement that last year’s instalment was over the disappointing F1 2015 – overall there’s more iteration than innovation this year – but it definitely usurps F1 2016 as Codemasters’ greatest F1 game to date.
This year’s Formula One season saw a massive shake-up in car regulations, which has resulted in bigger cars with wider tyres and improved aero. Basically, the cars are heavier but faster. Codemasters has responded, bringing all of that extra girth, grip, and speed to the new cars in F1 2017. On a steering wheel it’s probably the best force feedback I’ve ever felt in a Codemasters game and the sense of weight is terrific, but even on a pad the extra bite is noticeable. The 2017 cars feel like they’re clinging to the road a fraction more tenaciously than their 2016 counterparts.
The sense of weight is terrific.
Also featured is a smattering of retro rides from yesteryear, with 11 (or 12, with the special edition) extra F1 icons from five teams included (from Senna’s championship-winning 1991 McLaren to Schumacher’s beastly 2004 Ferrari). They do feel very distinct from the modern cars, and each other, and it’s fun to compare and contrast them. They also sound fantastic, but I don’t know whether or not that’s just because contemporary F1 cars sound like an angry blowfly trying to escape from an upturned bucket in comparison.
This Ferrari still holds a host of current lap records, 13 years later.
F1 2017’s classic cars are weaved through the career mode in a series of invitational events, which vary between overtaking challenges, checkpoint challenges, and handicap and multiclass races. They’re a bit like the Showcase Events in Forza Motorsport 6. I think it’s a clever and credible way of getting these old cars out on modern circuits, but the limited, greatest hits-style approach results in copies of the same car out on track whenever they’re all out racing.
There have been no new circuits added to the 2017 calendar so we have to make do with the same tracks we had in F1 2016. Four of them do have new short routes we can use in custom GPs and time trials, but their effect on the overall package isn’t really seismic. What’s notable is that all the tracks appear more vibrant and realistic than ever, and the desaturated tones that have defined Codemasters racing games for many years seem to have been finally trashed. The grass glows a rich, deep green, the skies burn a brilliant blue, and everything in between looks more lifelike than ever. This is a really good-looking racing game, from the neon glow of Singapore’s skyscrapers to the shiny, wet asphalt of Albert Park.
All the tracks appear more vibrant and realistic than ever.
Off-track things are a little less impressive (the engine is great at dealing with carbon fibre, bitumen, concrete, and rubber, but not so great with skin or hair) but I think this stuff is still a crucial part of the sporting atmosphere that makes F1 2017 work. My chief complaint here is that most of these paddock and podium vignettes are recycled from F1 2015 and F1 2016, so they’re very stale at this stage. I think we need some fresh flourishes next time around.
Female drivers are available in F1 2017, although I'm pretty sure Jackie Speedweasel is bald.
While Codemasters still hasn’t added Dan Ricciardo’s signature podium celebration, it has added some significant tweaks to the 10-season career experience, which is really the most fulfilling part of this whole package.
The research and development system has been drastically broadened, with an RPG-esque development tree that branches out across over 100 individual upgrades. Tables indicate the areas your team is trailing in – driving for Red Bull I’ve focussed almost exclusively on power unit upgrades to try and get back on terms with Mercedes and Ferrari – but the goal posts are always shifting as rival teams complete their own R&D. If it’s all a bit too obtuse you can ask for your engineer’s recommendations.
Reliability throughout the season is also a real issue now as we need to manage wear on key car components over the course of the year. The older a part is the more prone to failures it will be, something I learned when I lost a gear in Azerbaijan, and then learned again when my turbo went on the fritz in Canada, and then learned again when I couldn’t select lean fuel mode in. Japan, I think. I had a bunch of stuff break. I lost track.
The special thing about it is that it never really feels unfair; it just feels authentic . The lean fuel setting loss was a curly one because the delicate balancing act that is conserving fuel throughout a race is again a mini-game unto itself in F1 2017, but this time with a twist. One of the new practice programs in F1 2017 is fuel saving (coasting into corners, braking later, upshifting earlier) and if you perform well in this test your team will underfuel you for the main race. This will reduce weight but means you have to be driving with fuel saving in mind, or you will run out.
Codemasters’ ability to make the whole race weekend meaningful remains admirable.
Codemasters’ ability to make the whole race weekend meaningful remains admirable and everything you achieve in practice, qualifying, and racing still adds to your development point haul. The best way to play F1 2017 remains with at least 25% race distance selected (where opponent errors, safety cars, pit strategies, and dynamic weather changes all come into play) but part wear is still scaled to your career even if you choose the shortest, five-lap races. As with F1 2016, race distance and AI ability can be adjusted between every round, meaning we’re never stuck with a decision for a full, 20-race season.
The key side effect of all this preparation, micro-management, and on-track unpredictability is drama. It began in F1 2016 last year and it carries on here. Do you order that new engine part and cop a hefty grid penalty, or do you stick with a worn one from your original allocation? Do you stay out for one more lap on a set of nearly-cooked intermediates once the track has mostly dried up – to avoid double-stacking in the pits – or do you play it safe and come in right behind your teammate?
That front left is pretty much cooked, at this stage.
F1 2017 is jammed with drama, and that’s a big part of what makes it so satisfying to tackle. The one thing it could do with more of, though, is emotion. If Codemasters wants the F1 series to sit alongside other sports sims like FIFA, or NBA 2K, or MLB The Show, there has to be a better way to tell players they’re world champion than a text box.
F1 2017 isn’t light years ahead of the already very good F1 2016 but the new cars, retro content, and the juiced-up career mode make a very strong case for the upgrade, and I really appreciated the enhanced force feedback on a wheel. Rich with details and faithful to just about everything that makes contemporary F1 tick, F1 2017 is about as good a simulation of a single, modern motorsport as you can get.
A detailed and faithful ode to F1, F1 2017 is about as good a simulation of a single, modern motorsport as you can get.
