Why 2014 FIFA World Cup is skipping PS4 and Xbox One. "Were we to have fixated on those we would have alienated the host nation - which wouldn't have been wise." 2014 FIFA World Cup is skipping the new generation of consoles, opting instead for a full-priced boxed product on Xbox 360 and PS3, to ensure the game can reach as broad an audience as possible, EA Sports has said. It's a point made more pertinent by the slow take-up of the new generation of consoles in World Cup host nation Brazil, where thanks to import taxes a new PlayStation 4 costs $1850. During a press event previewing the new game, EA Sports producer Matt Prior told Eurogamer: "We only have a certain amount of resources that we can put towards this. "It isn't limitless. It was difficult and easy at the same time - at the end of the day, we wanted to get the game to as many people as we could. In terms of making that decision, that's an easy one. The PS3 and 360 are by far the more popular consoles, particularly in emerging territories, with Brazil being a key one of those. Were we to have fixated on PS4 / Xbox One, we would have alienated the host nation which wouldn't have been wise. " Prior also revealed that traditionally 50 per cent of players for its tie-in event games aren't regular FIFA players. That statistic helped persuade EA to make the game a full-priced, fully-featured retail game - alongside the lukewarm reception given to its last official tournament tie-in, UEFA Euro 2012. "We took a lot from that," said Prior. "The two main reasons we didn't do it as a DLC here - and it was driven from what we learned from Euro - was, firstly, primarily 50 per cent of our users only buy World Cup. There are a lot of people out there who only get interested in football when the World Cup comes around. So for those guys, if you do it as a DLC it's a real barrier to entry. They want to walk into a shop and pick up a packaged good off the shelf. If you do it through FIFA they've then got to go and buy FIFA, go home and go online to find the DLC and download it. It's a very complicated process for the kind of casual player. In addition it's more expensive for them." UEFA Euro 2012 was also criticised upon release for not adding to the core gameplay of its immediate predecessor, FIFA 12, a situation that's been addressed by 2014 FIFA World Cup. "You just can't do nearly as much with DLC," said Prior. "The way our AI works, it's practically impossible to do major updates, and that was one of the criticisms about Euro - it was game modes rather than gameplay. We wanted to make sure we did sufficient gameplay changes to make it appealing to FIFA guys and new guys. "There's also the physical size of it - there's loads of content in there which we couldn't do as DLC due to size limitations. A lot of that wouldn't be doable as DLC, so it alienates half our market and limits us in what we can do. The World Cup itself is big enough that it warrants its own game." The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of FIFA 14 will be getting World Cup-themed Ultimate Team content, and details are set to be revealed in the coming weeks. Xbox One, PS4, and PC not getting FIFA World Cup game, devs explain why [UPDATE] 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil launches April 15. No Xbox One, PS4 or PC versions in development, but next-gen consoles will get a "range of World Cup content and tournaments" within Ultimate Team. [UPDATE] Though the official 2014 FIFA World Cup game won't be available for the Xbox One or PlayStation 4, EA Sports confirmed on Twitter that FIFA 14 on those platforms will have a "range of World Cup content and tournaments" within FIFA Ultimate Team. More news will be shared as the tournament approaches. The original story is below. EA Sports will release the official game of the 2014 FIFA World Cup for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on April 15. There are no PC, Xbox One, or PlayStation 4 versions of the game in development. When questioned about the lack of Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions, producer Matthew Prior told GameSpot that due to the international appeal of the game, they expect the vast majority of fans to be playing on current-gen systems. Emerging markets, such as host nation Brazil, had prohibitively low next-gen adoption rates. 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil will feature an updated version of the Impact Engine used in the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of FIFA 14. Improvements to dribbling, increased accuracy in passing and a more forgiving fist-touch mechanic are among improvements to the on-pitch action detailed to GameSpot by producer Matthew Prior. The game will also feature a host of new and returning modes including: Road to the FIFA World Cup - Choose from 203 national teams and play through regional qualification, all the way to the World Cup Final. Story of Qualifying - Play through more than 60 real-world scenarios from the qualifying stages of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, each featuring unique commentary. Story of Finals - Updated within an hour of the end of each game, this mode allows you to replay every game in the tournament, each with unique challenges based on the day's events. Road to Rio de Janeiro - A bespoke online tournament held across the 12 host cities of the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Captain Your Country - Progress your custom player from a bench warmer to captain of his country. Online FIFA World Cup - Play through the 2014 FIFA World Cup against competitors online. 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil will feature the usual array of nation-specific fans sporting banners, flags, and seat cards in the stadiums. However a new addition sees the broadcast highlight fans watching the game back home. For instance, if England score, the game will cut to fans celebrating in Trafalgar Square, while German fans will scream and shout outside Berlin's Brandenburg Gate. Nineteen international managers will have their likenesses in the game, including Roy Hodgson, Joachim Low, and Luiz Felipe Scolari. Even the subsequently sacked Republic of Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni will appear during Irish qualification matches. English speaking players can also enjoy over 50 hours of prerecorded radio chat courtesy of EA Sports Talk Radio. These radio shows, hosted by broadcasters Andy Goldstein and Ian Darke, or Michael Davies and Roger Bennett of Men in Blazers fame, will play in the menus during various offline modes. Notable omissions from the next-gen versions of FIFA 14 are also in 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil, but unranked online friendlies and local co-op for up to 32 players are available. Latin American commentators Mario Kempes and Fernando Palomo will also be back. Other subtle additions to gameplay include the ability to instruct teammates to make runs, or crowd around the goalkeeper during set pieces. Goalies can now make Grobbelaar-esque knee wobbles and point in specific corners during penalty kicks, while defenders can leap over the back of strikers to clear headed balls. FIFA 14 getting free Ultimate Team World Cup update and new mode on PS4 and Xbox One. If you pick England you will almost certainly lose at penalties. Last updated by Martin Gaston on May 23, 2014 at 10:23AM. You are now subscribed. FIFA 14 will get a free update next week, bringing with it the new FIFA 14 Ultimate Team: World Cup mode. It'll be coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC on May 29. The World Cup FUT mode will run independently of FIFA 14 Ultimate Team, but revolves around the familiar ground rules: you build a fantasy team of players from around the world, only now it's all based around the 32 nations competing in the upcoming tournament. Your starter squad is boosted with cards randomly gained from packs that can be purchased with both in-game gold and real money. Card packs bought in this mode will not be usable in the normal FIFA 14 Ultimate Team mode, and can also not be traded with other players. But EA says that every FUT World Cup pack will also dish out a regular Gold pack--the ones you're used to--for use in the regular FIFA 14 Ultimate Team mode. The new mode also differentiates itself slightly from regular FUT by tweaking the chemistry mechanic, which is the key to a well-built team. Previously players needed to be positioned next to others from the same team, country, or league, but in this new World Cup mode it depends on country and governing confederation. Elsewhere there's official logos, kits, the match ball, and the Estadio do Marcana stadium, and players can take part in both offline and online tournaments. EA also adds that the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions of FIFA 14 will receive a World Cup Kick Off mode that allows players to play matches using the World Cup kits as any of the national teams competing. There's no full world cup tournament coming, though, as that's saved for the PS3/360 versions of the official tie-in game. Brazil dominate again, Paraguay back on big stage. EA Sports Confirm 2014 FIFA World Cup Game for Xbox One and PlayStation 4. EA Sports has confirmed a FIFA World Cup game is in development for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 consoles. As reported by Seeking Alpha, company CEO Andrew Wilson chatted about the upcoming release in the organisation’s recent investor call: In the last 2 weeks, you've also seen several announcements about our product slate for the remainder of this year and into FY '15. We are refining our focus on our biggest brands and great new IP in development, including The Sims 4 , EA SPORTS UFC , FIFA World Cup and Dragon Age: Inquisition . With FIFA 14 recently released to the masses, this subtle revelation of another footballing iteration may come too soon for many. It is currently unclear whether the new product will be a full-priced release akin to EA’s 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa , or follow the UEFA Euro 2012 model as downloadable content for the annual game. EA typically use the biennial titles to try out new features that may be included in the next sequel. The 2010 World Cup title introduced a pressure system for vital penalties, produced via a rumbling of the pad and increased difficulty when trying to place your shot. It also placed a huge emphasis on speedy attacking play, something that would dictate there series’ direction until the developer spent time tweaking physicality in FIFA 14 . Although specific details are yet to be confirmed, it is likely the 2014 World Cup game will feature variations of popular modes from previous versions. Favourites such as "Captain Your Country"—which allowed you to lead any nation to World Cup glory—and real scenarios from "Story of Qualifying" could return. UEFA Euro 2012 ’s "Expedition" mode may be called upon for inspiration. This tasks gamers with working their way across the continent in search of players for their team. Roads are built or lost depending on the result, starting with the lowest-ranked nations. After each successful encounter, a random player from the opposition joins your lineup. Perhaps most importantly, each of EA’s tournament titles have been fully licensed and bustling with atmosphere, lest we forget the migraine-inducing vuvuzela. The 2010 World Cup game featured 199 playable nations, compared to 47 available in the current annual release. This means the likes of Nigeria, Japan and Tiny Oceanic Team X are fully represented. Should you want to try to atone for Tahiti’s recent battering at the Confederations Cup, these licenses can make all the difference. Of course, with concrete details yet to be announced for the 2014 FIFA World Cup game, EA could decide to try something completely new. Be sure to stay with Bleacher Report for all of the latest details. 2014 World Cup arrives on Xbox One with Destination Brazil. Microsoft wants to make the Xbox One your go-to platform for experiencing the 2014 World Cup, whether you're watching the matches or highlights from them, playing video game soccer or following real-life soccer stories. The company is tackling that mission with a multi-pronged effort presented in a new hub, Destination Brazil. Arriving June 12 on the Xbox One dashboard, just in time for kickoff, Destination Brazil will be led by an app called Brazil Now that augments the experience of watching World Cup games on TV. The hub will also feature Every Street United , a new reality TV series that's part of Microsoft's slate of Xbox Originals programming. And Microsoft has built other partnerships for Destination Brazil as well. EA Sports' FIFA 14 and its World Cup content for FIFA Ultimate Team are highlighted in the hub, along with video content from Copa90, a leading soccer-focused YouTube channel. "What we're trying to really accomplish is a single destination that brings you the best way to experience these experiences with football — football or soccer, depending on the market you're in," said Matthew Reid, senior product marketing manager at Microsoft for Xbox sports experiences, in a phone interview with Polygon last week. Similar to the NFL on Xbox app that launched with the Xbox One last fall, Brazil Now is designed to interface with the act of watching cable TV on the console through its HDMI pass-through functionality. With the Xbox One's Snap feature, Brazil Now appears alongside the live TV experience, providing real-time statistics and photos while you're watching a World Cup contest. You can customize the app to your country of choice to get information about the team's schedule, roster and more. And as in the Xbox 360's Election 2012 hub, Brazil Now users can participate in live polls during matches, answering questions like "which team do you think will win?" Partaking in the polls gives users cards that unlock team photos, and there's a leaderboard in the app for progress toward all 96 cards. Brazil Now also offers useful functionality outside of live matches. Because of the data that's fed to the app, and its integration with the Xbox One's OneGuide, it knows when and where World Cup games will air on TV. It can provide notifications on the console about upcoming matches, and tune your cable box to the appropriate channel if you want to watch. This will also work with other apps outside of Xbox TV, for users who have the options through their cable subscription. According to Reid, "In the U.S., you could use the ESPN app to snap the Brazil Now experience against it." As in other apps of this type, cable TV is the centerpiece of the experience. Brazil Now is designed to work with cable TV; it's designed for people who will watch the World Cup on cable, and who want an enhanced experience along with the games themselves. Reid explained that Microsoft is hoping the app will help to demonstrate the usefulness of watching cable TV through your Xbox One — and get more people to start doing it. "What this delivers is an experience that you can then layer on top of the rights that you already have as a subscriber through your cable operator, or if you have an over-the-top partner," Reid explained. "Our real focus is the TV HDMI-out experience — we're trying to drive more adoption there — but it really is dependent on the end user's ability to have access and rights." Destination Brazil will be available in Australia, Austria, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, New Zealand, Spain, the U.K. and the U.S. Destination Brazil will also direct Xbox One users to Every Street United , which will premiere June 15 and conclude Aug. 3. In the reality TV series produced by Xbox Entertainment Studios, soccer legends Thierry Henry and Edgar Davids travel to eight countries — Argentina, Brazil, Ghana, the Netherlands, South Korea, Spain, the U.K. and the U.S. — looking for undiscovered street soccer stars. Every Street United will follow the personal stories of the young players vying for the opportunity to compete in a four-on-four street soccer game in Rio de Janeiro. The series will be available on multiple platforms through Xbox Video, as well as in its own app on Xbox 360 and Xbox One. The Every Street United app will feature a hidden object game for users to play. You can watch the trailer for the show above. For Microsoft, Destination Brazil is about showing off everything the Xbox One can do: providing augmented experiences atop existing cable subscriptions, connecting soccer fans around the world, offering original TV programming and giving people more games to play — all focused around a truly global event that only comes around once every four years. And in accordance with Microsoft's upcoming policy change, nothing within Destination Brazil requires an Xbox Live Gold subscription. "That's really how we look at the program," said Reid, "creating this overall mass of content and experiences we can put in one place for a point in time that really engages and rewards our fans." 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil. EA has announced that it will be releasing a standalone FIFA World Cup 2014 game for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 will be released on 17 April in the UK and across Europe, and a few days earlier on 15 April in North America. The game won't be coming out on PC, PlayStation 4 or Xbox One in an effort to get the game to as many people as possible while balancing development resources. The game's producer Matt Prior told IGN, "We've got to focus development on where there will be biggest for the buck. So obviously 360 and PS3 are still, by far, the most popular games consoles right now. "Over time that’s likely to change. But right now they have the biggest market penetration and we wanted to get this game to as many people as we possibly could." Another reason for development focussing on PS3 and Xbox 360 was to reach emerging markets, such as the tournament's host nation. "It’s going to be a huge game in Brazil. Gen 4 penetration there is pretty much zero. So we want get our game to as many people as we possibly could. Right now that’s PS3 and 360." You can read more from IGN's interview with Prior below, in which he talks in more detail about the changes made to FIFA's gameplay, how those improvements will roll back into the next FIFA, and how the World Cup will aim to make the experience more accessible for novice players. The game will build on the gameplay of FIFA 14, but will make considerable improvements, based on fan feedback and a desire to make the game more accessible to a wider audience, reflecting the mass appeal of the competition itself. Interview with Matt Prior, lead producer. "When we ship, we will be the best football game on 360 and PS3," says Matt Prior, the game's lead producer. He's obviously confident. But he's starting with a great foundation – FIFA 14. "Obviously we want to build on that. It's an evolution of the game engine really. It gets evolved from FIFA to FIFA, and then we come in and get involved." Some of these improvements are directly based on recent fan feedback on FIFA 14. The dribbling's been tightened up and player movement is more responsive. Those are just a couple of the many tweaks. And these aren't changes just with the summer in mind. When I ask Prior what will happened to these innovations, Prior tells me, "Yes, all of that will feedback into FIFA." The World Cup license provides a unique proposition for EA. Much like the fabled competition itself, the tie-in game appeals to both diehard fans of the FIFA series but also taps into a much wider audience, reaching those who infrequently buy an entry in the FIFA series. Potentially, this poses a dilemma. "We want to make sure that anyone who is coming to this game from FIFA notices a difference and improvement in gameplay," Prior explains the predicament to me. "But the World Cup is a unique product in that it splits the market 50-50 in terms of who buy. So about 50% of users are brand-new to FIFA – they have never played it before. And obviously that’s the mass appeal of the World Cup." By having the game rooted in FIFA's engine, it's likely the experience will satisfy those intimately-acquianted with the series. But Prior and his team have made a concerted effort to acknowledge and welcome those who find FIFA, with its multitude of controls, rather overwhelming. "We know a lot of people play FIFA and don’t play it for that long," admits Prior. "Primarily potentially that’s one of the reasons. They’re just not good enough at the game, and they want a positive experience. And even at the lowest difficult level – amateur – they’re still not having much fun. So we’ve made big strides to focus on these players. So we've actually introduced a brand new difficulty level specifically for those people called 'Beginner'. Which is very much an entry level difficult, which allows you to have that positive experience. It’s not a skill level that we anticipate people stick with for a long, long time. It’s very much considered an entry level position. "If you’ve never played FIFA before, this is definitely the product to get on board." Daniel is IGN's UK Games Editor.
