Final Fantasy 7 Remake release date, trailers, gameplay info and latest news.
/Final Fantasy 7 turned 20 this year, and is rightfully praised as one of the greatest JRPGs of all time. It was revolutionary, introducing the genre to millions of new fans with its imaginative characters and unique setting.
Square Enix is set to deliver a long-awaited remake, but as is often the case with Square titles (just look at Kingdom Hearts 3 for a similar tale), has been and is taking a long time to arrive.
Square Enix has shifted the development of Final Fantasy 7 Remake from external partner CyberConnect 2 to its internal studio. Having been announced almost two years ago now, we still have no idea when FF7 Remake will launch.
Taking development duties away from CyberConnect 2 is a “sensitive subject” according to Square Enix (via Kotaku).
“We’ve taken over the development side of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake,” Square Enix’s Naoki Hamaguchi explains. “Up until now, development has progressed by receiving external collaboration, but from here on out, with production and quality in mind, we’re shifting to our in-house organisation.”
Square Enix unveiled a new image for Final Fantasy 7 Remake during the original’s 20th anniversary event. Many of us were expecting a new teaser trailer, but this will have to do.
Speaking in an interview with Japanese magazine Famitsu, Game director Tetsuya Nomura said Final Fantasy 7 Remake is ahead of Kingdom Hearts 3 in some respects. Nomura, who is working on both projects simultaneously, has said some elements such as cutscenes are coming along nicely. However, he declined to comment further on development now it resides internally at Square Enix.
TrustedReviews has compiled all the news, information and trailers you need for Final Fantasy 7 Remake.
What is Final Fantasy 7 Remake?
Developed by Square Enix, Final Fantasy 7 Remake is a complete reconstruction of the original game that maintains the iconic narrative, characters and locations fans will know and love.
You play as Cloud Strife, a mercenary who finds himself working for AVALANCHE, a terrorist group with plans to save the planet from Shinra, an evil corporation ruling over millions in the dystopian city of Midgar.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake release date – When is it coming out?
Final Fantasy 7 Remake will be told across three separate games, which will, presumably, have their own individual release dates.
“It will essentially be a full scale game for each part of the multi-part series. In 13, each instalment told the story from a different angle. It was kind of like approaching an unknown territory in a sense,” Kitase told Game Informer.
Square Enix is yet to confirm whether each part will be a full-priced affair, or will follow a digital episode structure similar to something like Telltale.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Story – What’s it about?
The narrative, characters and locations from Final Fantasy 7 are instantly iconic, propelled into the zeitgeist of any gamer growing up in the 1990s. With that being said, Square Enix is under a lot of pressure to deliver an experience that feels both faithful and unique to the source material.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake is intended as a direct retelling of the 1997 original, albeit with a few caveats to accommodate modern generation standards. It is still unclear whether or not all the locations and characters from the original game will make an appearance. Specific plot elements are also expected to be altered in some way to be more relatable for modern gamers.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake Gameplay – Has it changed?
Completely reworking something as instantly recognisable as Final Fantasy 7 is a risky proposition, but one Square Enix is more than willing to tackle. FF7 Remake is making some major changes to the established battle system, introducing a formula more akin to Kingdom Hearts or Devil May Cry than anything else.
The turn-based battles that enthralled us in back in our childhood bedrooms are no more, replaced by a more actively dynamic experience. Combat and exploration now take place in real-time, much like Final Fantasy 15, so it’s safe assume that battle transitions have been removed entirely. Cloud and friends will now explore a world populated by enemies as opposed to traversing a separate world map.
Considering the experience is to be split across multiple games, it may or may not be open world. Exploration will no doubt play a part, but we may be restricted to locations contextually important to the story as opposed to the open-ended nature of the original. Hopefully this isn’t the case, but as it stands, it’s far too early to tell.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake trailers – How does it look?
Square Enix has given only a few brief yet exciting glimpses at the long-awaited remake since its reveal at E3 2015. Here’s one of the earliest trailers:
This is taken from the very beginning of the game, giving us the impression that development is still in the early stages. That being said its wonderful to see such beloved characters remastered in HD alongside a remastered rendition of the orchestral score. The battle system is shaping up pretty nicely, too.

Square Enix news: Final Fantasy 7 Remake release update, Switch reveal, Xbox One X launch.
SQUARE ENIX news this week includes a Final Fantasy 7 Remake release update, a new Nintendo Switch reveal and an Xbox One X enhanced games launch.
The latest Square Enix news for Nintendo Switch, PS4 and Xbox One X owners.
While Paris Games Week didn’t include any fresh Final Fantasy 7 Remake news, fans are still hopeful for something to arrive in 2017.
So far Square Enix has not revealed when gamers on the PS4 will be able to return to Midgar, the Golden Saucer and be reunited with Cloud and Aeris.
It’s possible news on the Final Fantasy 7 Remake release date could be revealed during the PlayStation Experience in California this December.
There have been various hints this year that something new will be revealed in regards to the PS4 remake project, PSX apparently the last possible event for this.
But ahead of a possible FF7 announcement, some retailers that are taking pre-orders have listed possible release dates.
Import specialist Play Asia previously listed the Final Fantasy 7 Remake release date as this December, before turning it to “to be announced”.
More interestingly though, GameSeek has a very specific date for the Final Fantasy 7 Remake.
The online retailer has listed the Final Fantasy 7 Remake as having a June 15 2018 release date.
Another UK retailer has something eye-catching on their website, with Base taking pre-orders for FF7, as well as listing the game for December 30 this year.
While this is likely a placeholder, what is noteworthy is the artwork they have.
Unlike other retailers, who have the logo or the Final Fantasy 7 Remake, the Base artwork looks unlike any FF7 artwork seen before.

FINAL Fantasy VII Remake is coming to PS4, although Square Enix is yet to reveal the release date.

Square Enix have started to release their first Xbox One X enhanced games for the upgraded Microsoft console.
Rise of the Tomb Raider now offers three visual modes on Xbox One X, including Native 4K: (full 3840 by 2160), High Frame Rate, HDR display support, Spatial audio support, including Dolby Atmos and enhanced texture resolution for Lara Croft, NPCs, and environments.
In addition to these visual enhancements, current season pass owners who own an Xbox One X will receive all of the new content featured in Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration.
This includes the "Blood Ties" single player content, co-op play for Endurance mode, "Extreme Survivor" difficulty setting for the main campaign, 20 Year Celebration outfit and gun, and five classic Lara skins.
In total, Square Enix will offer three titles on the Xbox One X with enhanced settings, with Final Fantasy 15 available to try now.
Life is Strange: Before the Storm will also be an enhanced game, although it hasn’t yet launched.
Final Fantasy 15 maybe one of the standout additions to the list, seeing a big improvement over the standard Xbox One version.
The Xbox One X version offers better draw distances, as well as 4K support and HDR upgrades, a welcome change from when the game first launched.

In other news, Nintendo Switch fans have been given a big boost about new releases from Square Enix.
Hajime Tabata, director of Final Fantasy 15, previously said that tests had been carried out to see how the Unreal Engine 4 performed on the Switch.
This is the engine that powers the Final Fantasy 7 Remake, and he said Nintendo’s hybrid console handled it well.
And now Square Enix, during their latest financial results briefing, have talked about their plans for the Switch.
According to Gematsu, the Japanese gaming giant said they saw the core architectures of PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Switch as similar.
They believe that multi-platform development is possible by building a basic version of a game then optimising it for each platform.
Square Enix added that they had high expectations for the Nintendo Switch, and would aggressively pursue development.
They added that they would not rule out any IPs - new, existing or even revivals - for the Nintendo Switch.
The comments will raise hopes that Final Fantasy 15, out now on PS4 and Xbox One, and Final Fantasy 7 could come to the Nintendo Switch.

Final Fantasy VII Remake release date UPDATE: PS4 AND Xbox One editions listed for 2017.
FINAL FANTASY VII fans will be happy to hear that the upcoming remake is currently being advertised with a 2017 release date.
Final Fantasy VII Remake could hit PS4 and Xbox One in 2017.
The Final Fantasy VII Remake release date might be sooner than you think.
Square Enix has barely discussed the Final Fantasy VII Remake at all since announcing the game at E3 2015, but there's encouraging signs on Australian retail site EB Games.
The Final Fantasy VII Remake is being advertised for 2017 on the retail site, although Square Enix is yet to make an official announcement.
In even better news, the game is also being advertised for Xbox One, although it's unclear how far apart the two versions will land.
Final Fantasy VII Remake was announced at the Sony E3 conference, where it was revealed that fans could "play it first on PlayStation 4".
While timed exclusivity is implied, this is the first time an Xbox One version has been spotted online. Hopefully a Nintendo Switch version is also in the works.

With few updates since the original announcement, fans were worried that Final Fantasy VII had been scrapped.
However, game director Tetsuya Nomura recently confirmed that a new FF7 announcement is coming, although no date has been announced.
“I know I haven't given any information in a while, but please rest assured that work is moving forward steadily,” he said.
“We are currently getting specifics ready for the next information release, and just like we've done with KH2.8 this time, we plan to bring a whole lot out in one go instead of dribs and drabs, so please look forward to it.
“I am looking forward to the reveals myself.
“I still don't know the timing for what we will be able to show you next, so I can't give any details, but please be excited.”
Fans are hoping for a Final Fantasy 7 release date to be announced, or possibly just a target window, like Holiday 2017.
The Final Fantasy VII development team will draw inspiration from the 2005 film Advent Children.
This is especially true of the visual style, not to mention some of the narrative changes and tweaks.
The combat, meanwhile, looks much more action-packed, ditching the turn-based battles from the original PSOne release.
The game is also being released in three separate parts, which will allow Square Enix to fit everything in, and even add some new features.
In the meantime you can check out Final Fantasy XV, which is described as the best entry in the series since Final Fantasy VII. Or there's World of Final Fantasy, which adopts a more playful tone.

'Final Fantasy 7' remake release date: Xbox One version will come eventually.
According to EB Games Australia, the much-ballyhooed "Final Fantasy 7" remake will most likely be available on the Xbox One at some point or another.
The retailer broke the news after one Facebook user asked them directly if the game was going to be available on the Xbox One. According to EB Games, though the game has only been announced for the Playstation 4, it will still be made available for Microsoft's current gen console. EB Games said that the only difference is that the Playstation 4 has been given early access to the "Final Fantasy 7" remake.
EB Games is even doubling down on its claim that the remake will be available for the Xbox One by already listing it on their web site.
If EB Games is correct, it would mean that the "Final Fantasy 7" remake will merely be a timed exclusive, according to Attack of the Fanboy.
In related news, Tetsuya Nomura, the recently announced director for the remake, said that he was surprised by the news that he had been tabbed to helm the game.
According to iDigital Times, Nomura only found out that he would be directing the remake during the internal screening of the game's trailer.
Despite being initially caught off guard by the news that he was to be the remake's director, Nomura already has his own ideas for what the game should be. He said that the game will not feature any new characters, but he did say that he plans to update the game's graphics to take advantage of the technology available now.
As for the game's story, Nomura has also indicated that they have no plans to make any grand changes to the plot that many fans are already very familiar with.
No official release date has been announced for the "Final Fantasy 7" remake, but most fans are hoping that it will be available by 2017.

'Final Fantasy 7' Remake Release Date: PS4, Xbox One Preorders Available Ahead Of Q4 2016 Launch.
The "Final Fantasy VII" remake was revealed at E3 earlier this year and already pre-orders are availalble for the title. Much more surprisingly, retailers Amazon and EBGames.com have the game listed as releasing Dec. 31, 2016.
We obviously know the 2016 date is a placeholder, but shows some significance. The year associated with the placeholder dates have been accurate more often than not in the past. It's also worth noting that when a game is posted across multiple sites around the same time it usually the doing of the publisher, reports Game Revolution.
Even more EBGames has both a PS4 and Xbox One version up for pre-order, which lines up with the multiplatform yet "PlayStation first" nature of the game. Many gamers have been wondering how long PlayStation will have exclusivity over the title, but of course Square Enix has been silent about the situation.
Meanwhile, Japanese game developer Tetsuya Nomura will take the lead for the "Final Fantasy VII" remake. Nomura stated that "FFVII" will not just be an HD version of the title but reassured fans that he will respect the original game, leaving the vital parts intact. He also stated that the title will take some time to complete so the Q4 2016 release seems legitimate.
Additionally, the director said there will be no new characters introduced in the remake and they are working to make the visual displays closer to reality. We will bring you more news on the release as it becomes availalbe but until then check out the games E3 2015 teaser trailer below:

Well, it is no longer in doubt. Final Fantasy 7 remake will release on both consoles, Microsoft’s Xbox gaining access to the software later than Sony’s product. This information was revealed during the PlayStation Experience which occurred today. There isn’t any doubt anymore.

Square Enix Is Remaking 'Final Fantasy VII' For PS4 And Xbox One, But Will It Be As Good As The Original?
Cloud Strife, the main protagonist of Final Fantasy 7, is one of two characters shown in Square Enix's remake trailer. Photo: Square Enix / Sony.
Sony and Square Enix surprised the world at E3 2015, announcing a full remake of the most popular game in the Final Fantasy series: the legendary Final Fantasy 7. The game was originally released in 1997 on the PlayStation One and has amassed a fervent fanbase over its twenty year life, but fans have been clamoring for an HD remake for years. They’re finally getting one, but why now?
Final Fantasy VII has long been a giant in the Japanese role playing game genre (JRPG), laying the groundwork both future Final Fantasies and other JRPGs would follow; you can’t have a conversation about “the best RPG,” Japanese or otherwise, without someone quickly throwing this game’s name into the ring. Square Enix is very well aware of their fans’ adoration. They’ve produced spinoffs in the past, from the well-received “Crisis Core” to the better-off-forgotten “Dirge of Cerberus” and “Advent Children” CGI film. Varying quality of tie-ins aside, these properties generally make Square Enix a considerable amount of money. If the demand and love for the IP is still there, why would Square not want to capitalize?
It’s not that simple, however. This isn’t a (comparatively) simple HD remaster like the re-released editions of Final Fantasy X and X-2; it’s a full-on, from the ground up, put-on-a-pot-of-coffee-this-will-take-a-while remake. With something as nebulous and large as FFVII, from an era where more games had vast worlds and characters that may not fly today, this is a daunting proposition.
When Final Fantasy VII was initially released in the middle of the PS1’s lifecycle, it was revolutionary -- gone were 2D sprites, now we had 3D polygonal character models and three-dimensional environments to explore. We take that for granted now, but as far as the modern Japanese RPG is concerned, this was 3D Genesis. Adding a constant third dimension to the mix opened up so many possibilities, though FFVII retained the traditional turn-based battle system the series had become known for. But that’s not the only thing that’s cemented in the memory of gamers.
FFVII’s story was written and delivered in an era when Square took itself a bit less seriously, and Final Fantasy games were allowed to have a few diversions from the angst and save the world/impending doom/we’re all going to die atmosphere. One of its main characters, Barrett, had a miniature gatling gun on his arm. Cid was a chainsmoker who constantly swore.
Main protagonist Cloud donned women’s clothes to infiltrate a brothel, a situation that morphed into a slapstick comedy about gender and sexuality. Cloud found himself trapped in a sauna with a group of stereotypical homosexual bodybuilders, and dryly joking about the situation. It’s difficult to imagine a game presenting the same kind of scenarios today without Internet backlash.
One of Final Fantasy 7's most iconic sights, the passenger train through the lower levels of Midgar, recreated using PS4 hardware. Photo: Square Enix / Sony.
Bringing this story to life in 2015 raises a host of questions: What dialogue and situations stay original? How, if at all, do characters have to change? How does Square handle voice acting in a game that didn’t originally have voices? How do they scale the original’s massive world? How long will it take to develop? Most importantly, how can the remake live up to the massive expectations of the fanbase?
Moreover, what kind of timetable is there for such a project? Square Enix’s last project on this scale is the beleaguered Final Fantasy XV, which has been in development in one form or another since 2006 and though it’s now in a limited beta demo, does not have a final release date. While it’s great to see Square Enix announce that they are indeed remaking the game, they don’t have the best track record in the past ten years.
But perhaps the team has learned a thing or two during FFXV’s development. We’ll have wait and see. “ After a long sleep, time has come.”
