Many of gaming’s most compelling stories come from those who’ve helped to create our favorite Xbox One games. In our Inside Xbox One X Enhanced series, these creators will share the behind-the-scenes accounts of the work involved in enhancing these epic games for Xbox One X, how they’ve helped chart the course of the world’s most powerful console, and what that means for the future of gaming. Today, we’ll be chatting with 343 Industries’ Chris Lee, Studio Head of FPS Games, about the action-packed shooter Halo 5: Guardians . What specifically is your development team doing to enhance Halo 5: Guardians for Xbox One X? The Xbox One X provides a ton of additional power that we’ve used to lift the Halo 5: Guardians resolution to 4K Ultra HD while maintaining the smooth 60fps gameplay experience. Additionally, the team was able to go in and change some level of detail settings so we can render more detail further away from the player. The Xbox One X update that enables 4K on Xbox One X is also the 11 th free content release we’ve created for Halo 5: Guardians . Along with Xbox One X enhancements, the “Overtime” update includes the multiplayer game mode Oddball, support for the new “Halo 5: Guardians Local Server” app on Windows 10 that lets gamers use their Windows 10 PC into a local server for Halo 5 custom games, new in-game skins, and weapon tuning updates. These content updates are available to all Xbox One players! How do these enhancements impact the gaming experience? Playing Halo 5 in 4K shows off a ton of detail on our characters, weapons, and vehicles that was not possible to see in 1080p. From the materials and stitches on our Spartan’s gloves to operator instructions on the ARs all the little details really shine. H5 4k is not only a visual treat, but the enhanced power of Xbox One X has the same smooth gameplay throughout campaign and multiplayer, especially in massive Warzone matches and frenetic campaign maps. The load times are also significantly faster (especially noticeable in campaign), and the in-game cutscenes look beautiful when viewing in full fidelity at 4k. Why did your development team choose to focus on these enhancement areas? When we built Halo 5: Guardians , the team spent a lot of time and effort to create beautiful textures and assets in the game that were not possible to fully appreciate at 1080p on Xbox One. Gamers saw some of these details in Halo 5: Forge on Windows 10, which supports running in 4K. We were immediately excited about increasing the resolution, so Xbox One X gamers can appreciate the full fidelity of our art assets. During development we found that with the extra power of Xbox One X we could also increase the level of detail on objects at distances that are further away from the player. This helps with the way we transition between assets and creates a much better visual experience during gameplay. How do you expect fans of Halo 5: Guardians will respond to playing it on Xbox One X with these enhancements? The amount of visual detail that pops in 4K, from the texture of your Spartan’s glove holding a Magnum to the crisp details of the world of Sanghelios, really adds to the overall feel of the game. The amount of detail that players didn’t know was there will be a nice surprise. How has the process been to get the game up and running on Xbox One X? The process has been great. We wanted to get our hands on Xbox One X development hardware as soon as possible. From there our engineers in 343 and at our partner Skybox Labs started cranking to get things rolling in 4k. SkyBox Labs has been a great partner co-developing Halo 5 , Halo 5: Forge , and things like our “Overtime” update which includes adding Xbox One X support for 4K. They were instrumental in helping us deliver the Xbox One X enhancements, and I am excited to continue this partnership for our future projects! What enhancement were you most excited about leveraging for Halo 5: Guardians on Xbox One X? The ability to play Halo 5 at such high visual fidelity while also having faster load times and smooth 60fps gameplay is something I’m really looking forward to sharing with our community. What does 4K and HDR mean for your game, games in the future and development at your studio? The team is excited to think of new ways to leverage the power and fidelity of the Xbox One X. We have a lot of ambition for future projects. 4k lets us show a ton of detail in our assets. HDR is a great technology for a sci-fi game with vibrant color and FXs as a critical part of our gameplay sandbox. We are excited to get our hands on it so we create intense new visuals for our universe. Thanks to Chris for taking the time to chat with us about Xbox One X Enhanced. We’ll be bringing you more interviews with more developers in the future, so stay tuned to Xbox Wire!

Microsoft Xbox One review: Much improved, the Xbox One has hit its stride. Xbox One vs. PS4: How to choose the right console for you. The time to grab an Xbox One or PS4 is right now. Watch this before pulling the trigger on a new video game console. by Jeff Bakalar. Microsoft Xbox One. 6 Related Models. Hot Products. Apple iPhone X. Samsung Galaxy Note 8. Google Home Mini. Google Pixel 2 XL. The Good Microsoft's Xbox One offers impressive graphics and a solid list of exclusive 2015 titles. The Microsoft console currently edges ahead of the PS4 with a better selection of media apps. The console's fall-2015 dashboard update is a noticeable improvement. The console has backward compatibility with around 100 Xbox 360 titles, and that list is poised to grow. The Bad The Xbox One's new interface is still more convoluted than the PS4's. In general, the PS4 delivers slightly better installation times, graphics and performance on cross-platform games. The Xbox One also lags behind the PS4 in its selection of indie games. The Kinect's legacy is still a blemish. The Bottom Line While the PS4 remains our overall preferred choice in the game console race, the Xbox One's significant course corrections and solid exclusives make it a compelling alternative. Review Sections. CNET Gaming Consoles Microsoft Xbox One. With E3 2015 safely in the rearview mirror and the Xbox One's second anniversary fast approaching, we're diving back in the home console pond to take the temperature of the current landscape of videogame consoles. Without a doubt, the Xbox One has gone through the more significant metamorphosis of the two big consoles since their release in November 2013 -- the other being the PlayStation 4. Even before its launch, Microsoft had begun changing the messaging philosophy of the platform, going from a console that heavily relied on DRM to an unshackled experience where owners can trade in and play used games. That was followed up by making the Kinect motion sensor no longer a required part of the system (the no-Kinect bundle is now the default entry-level model). Meanwhile, a lot has been fine-tuned under the Xbox One's hood -- particularly the firmware's functionality (not actual hardware tweaks), which, from a performance and ease-of-use standpoint, is still playing second to Sony's impressively smooth interface. A massive interface update dubbed the "New Xbox One Experience" was released in November 2015 that has improved some of the dashboard's logistics and aesthetics, but it's still hanging on to some lingering frustrations. But more on that later. Overall, Xbox One has had a great 2015 and is home to the best exclusives of the 2015 holiday season. In the short term, Xbox One makes a solid argument for ownership, but do 2016 and beyond look to be just as promising? To be clear, the two consoles are very closely matched. They offer a growing library of third-party games -- mainstays like the Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed and Madden series, as well as newer titles like Fallout 4 and Rainbow Six Siege are all available for both platforms. And both systems double as full-service entertainment systems, with built-in Blu-ray players and streaming services like Netflix, YouTube and Hulu. In our opinion, the PS4 still maintains an edge, with slightly smoother gameplay and a much more straightforward interface. But Xbox harbors a more mature media app ecosystem in the US and a decent list of exclusive titles. Xbox One will continue to have a solid 2015 in terms of exclusive software, but 2016 and beyond aren't as well defined. Editors' note, November 16, 2015 : This review has been updated to reflect the changes to the Xbox One platform including the November 12, 2015, New Xbox One Experience dashboard update. The console's overall score has improved from a 7.7 to an 8 and we've added one point to the design and value subcategories. Xbox One bundles. Xbox One is sold in what feels like a constantly expanding bundle market. In fact, don't buy the console if it doesn't come with at least one game. At any given time the odds are there's a bundle that includes a game that's right for you. For the most part, the Kinect camera-microphone array has been eliminated from bundles, but you can still purchase the original tandem for around $400 or more. Alternately, you can buy the Kinect module separately (usually with a game included) for $150. That said, we really can't recommend Kinect for much of anything. No matter when you decide to buy an Xbox One, odds are you'll find a compelling bundle or discounted special pricing. Major Xbox One exclusive games (available now or soon): - Forza Motorsport 6. - Rise of the Tomb Raider (timed exclusive) - Halo: Master Chief Collection. - Titanfall (also available on PC) Major Xbox One exclusive games due in 2016 and beyond: Xbox One pros. Here are the areas where the Xbox One excels -- and where it occasionally has an edge over the PS4: Media apps. The Xbox One has a slightly better lineup of streaming apps than any other current-generation console. It has roughly twice as many offerings as the PS4. Some notable wins here include Comedy Central, Fox and FX Now, MTV, Bravo Now, NBC, Starz, TED, USA Now, Verizon FiOS TV and Skype (Microsoft-owned) -- none of which are available on PlayStation 4 at the current time. Xbox One is also home to EA Access, a subscription early-access program that gives members a chance to play games a few days before they're released and provides access to a growing list of EA legacy games. Media playback. Xbox One now has a media player app that will play nearly any file format you throw at it -- off a drive or anything discoverable on your home network, like another PC or NAS (network attached storage). The Xbox One media app also lets you customize the dashboard with a custom photo wallpaper. As of June 2015, the PS4 has a media player app too. Kinect advantages. Kinect is an ambitious attempt to integrate voice control and motion gesturing with live TV, interface navigation and some gaming elements. That said, it's definitely taken a backseat in terms of priority. In fact, we don't think Microsoft even said the word "Kinect" at the company's E3 2015 press conference. It's also no longer bundled with a new retail Xbox One. But, if you're still intrigued by its potential, when it works, Kinect technology brings with it an "aha" moment straight out of a sci-fi movie. Kinect lets you change the channel, volume and other items using only your voice. Its problems, however, are documented later in this review. Other features of the Xbox One experience can be accessed or activated with hand gestures and voice commands. You can say, "Xbox, record that," and the console will save the last chunk of gameplay to the hard drive. The list of voice-control triggers is lengthy. Of course, the Kinect is available only in the more expensive $400-and-up Xbox One bundle. However, if you buy the entry-level no-Kinect bundle and decide you want to upgrade, you can buy a standalone Kinect later for $149, £130 or AU$170 (usually bundled with a game). Sarah Tew / CNET. The Xbox One controller. While it's not necessarily what I'd call a vast improvement over the Xbox 360's stellar input device, the Xbox One's controller is a solid and mostly comfortable handheld. Microsoft has totally revamped the problematic D-pad present on the Xbox 360 controller and opted instead for a clicky, tactile pad. Battery life is impressive on the controller, though it takes two AAs as opposed to the DualShock 4's internal rechargeable battery. (You can use your own rechargeables, or invest an extra $25, £19 or AU$30 per controller in Microsoft's Play and Charge Kit.) Microsoft debuted two new controllers around the time of E3 2015: a revamped controller with a 3.5mm headphone port and the Xbox One Elite Wireless Controller ($150/AU$199) which allows players to customize their pad with interchangeable D-pad pieces, analog sticks and triggers. That controller is also available in a bundle with a 1TB solid-state hybrid drive for $500. Both controllers can also be connected to a Windows PC with a Micro-USB cable or wirelessly to a Windows 10 PC with a $25 dongle. Related Links. BYO USB 3.0 storage. The PS4 has an easily accessible and replaceable hard drive, but the Xbox One's drive is not to be messed with. Instead, you can bring your own storage via an external hard drive over a USB 3.0 connection. And because USB 3.0 is faster than the Xbox One's internal stock drive, odds are you may see a slight bump in performance, too. Just make sure your external drive is 250GB or bigger. Cloud-synced game saves. Signing into any other Xbox One will give you access to all of your digital games and their respective game-saves. PS4 owners need to have PlayStation Plus to upload cloud saves, while Xbox One owners can do it without Xbox Live Gold. For what it's worth, the cloud game-saving feature is definitely better on Xbox One. Going from console to console is a much smoother experience. Gold no longer required for basically everything. It took a while, but an Xbox Live Gold membership is no longer needed to access apps like Netflix and Skype. You still need it to play multiplayer games online, but the massive restrictions on other functionality have mostly been lifted. Always-on has a bright side. While the Xbox One's always-on feature has been a point of some contention, jumping right into a game from live TV is nothing short of brilliant. Xbox One will suspend your most recently played game while you watch TV or do other things and when you rejoin your game session it's resurrected with absolutely no loading time. Of course, if you don't use your Xbox One with live TV there's really no reason to keep the console on 24-7, save for receiving updates when you're not using the console. PlayStation 4 added the majority of the functionality described here with a firmware update. Exclusive games and content. Microsoft has secured a number of high-profile exclusive deals for content with third-party games like Evolve and early beta access to a number of games including Tom Clancy's The Division. Xbox One also has a solid roster of exclusive franchises including the Forza, Halo, Fable, and now the Sunset Overdrive and Titanfall series. A more detailed list of exclusives can be found at the top of this review. Xbox Games with Gold. While it debuted with an underwhelming selection of free titles, Xbox's Games with Gold monthly giveaway lets Xbox Live Gold members download two Xbox One games for free. The caliber of these titles has started to improve, but still isn't as impressive as the entire PlayStation Plus package. Hot Products. Apple iPhone X. The best iPhone asks you to think different. Most Helpful Reviews. Stunned (in a bad way) After the perpetually long wait for a TRUE next gen peek at what the Master Chief is bringing in this most recent installment I am completely and utterly disappointed. I, unlike I suppose everyone else that read all of the blogs and forum posts about this upcoming title, didn't even think to check if local multiplayer would be offered in this game before purchasing because, to me, it was a no brainer. I mean, come on. it's HALO. the franchise that pretty much invented multiplayer FPSs. just because all of our systems our internet connected these days doesn't mean people don't still enjoy classic, split-screen multiplayer on the same couch with a couple of their closest friends or relatives! We are just going to toss the capability to the side as a unnecessary "luxury"? In fact, I would say in a series like Halo, it is absolutely a requirement to continue the tradition. I find this aspect in the evolution of gaming deeply dissatisfying. The promotion of gamers, and children of gamers to hole up in dark rooms alone, chatting away at people they can't see and many times don't know instead of the enjoyment of 4 players on a big screen, screen-peeking, and trash talking until the wee hours of the morning. And don't give me that "online multiplayer is playing with other people and being social!". NO, it's not. no matter how much online interaction you have, it is not real life. it is listening to 8 year olds that shouldn't even own a copy of a game like this, scream obscenities and be completely and utterly obnoxious to the point that the button tree combo to get to enable "mute all" is permanently engrained in our muscle memory as a result of being forced to do it at the start of every match. I get it though I suppose, after all, having 3 extra controllers is way more expensive than having to use up another TV in my home, buy an extra Xbox One, second Xbox Live membership#thanks to the next gen membership "re-structuring" #, and another copy of the game just so me and my son and I can play together is WAAAAYYY cheaper. oh wait. no it isn't. I understand this is a non-issue to most single gamers that don't have kids, and I guess that is where the industry is choosing to focus their attention, but as a classic gamer raised on a NES and now raising 3 gamers of my own, this "death" of the local multiplayer world has pretty much just solidified my stance that FPS's are now completely worthless to me. They want to make more money by forcing everyone to have a copy on their own individual XB1? Seems to me that alienating the entire demographic of "gamer families", with relatively higher median incomes than your average 18-32 yr old single gamer is a gutsy play. It's Microsoft, so they will do what they want and still make a ridiculous amount of money, but for this franchise, removing the one aspect of the game my son and I were actually looking forward to is appalling. If I could return it I would, and I won't buy another game that has a '1' on the back of the box next to the number of players, probably for the rest of my life. No, I would not recommend this to a friend. Please try again later. Sucks without split-screen. Really killed the game no having split screen. I am all for online gaming but it is nice to get friends together IN THE SAME ROOM and play together. its called human interaction, its good for you. No, I would not recommend this to a friend. Please try again later. No Season Pass Required. Finally. Forever the best franchise in Xbox history. One thing to note, this will be one of the only games that does not require a Season Pass for future DLC! That means all multiplayer maps are free for the life of the game, as it should be. I would recommend this to a friend. Please try again later. NO COOP ON SAME CONSOLE. The reason I put it as 2 stars, is that I bought the game for the coop play, but I cant do so on same console. This game is good otherwise, but 343 screwed up big time. No, I would not recommend this to a friend. Please try again later. No local Co-Op. I can not believe that can't play Halo with my friends in the same room. Also you need Xbox Gold in order to play online with friends as well. If I could I would return the game. No, I would not recommend this to a friend. Please try again later. Halo 5 was a huge disappointment Christmas morning. I wanted to get away from Xbox and get a PlayStation for this generation of consoles. My kids, however, wanted the Xbox to play Halo. I, of course, got them Halo 5, an Xbox One, 1 year of gold, and 3 extra controllers. After my kids anxiously waited, for what seemed like forever, for the Xbox to install this stupid game. The kids all sat down with a controller in hand and launched Halo 5. Their disbelief and disappointment was real. Halo was turned off and another game install began. Sigh, $600 dollars wasted. Not having local split screen is like some old bitty adding raisins to your favorite desert or a cream filled treat that no longer has a cream filling. You are all excited for the seemingly inevitable good feeling you get when bite your favorite treat, but then there is a terrible surprise. 343 Industries you have failed this game and many loyal Halo fans with your irresponsible handling of Halo. Not all Halo players have real life friends that enjoy casually playing Halo and they will come to your defense; however, many do. You have ostracized those players and you have closed opportunities to attract new players. Many of my real life friends purchased Halo after playing it at my house. They would then come over and hook up their Xbox and invite more Halo newbs to come join the fun and the cycle continued. After my kids had some time to get their split screen and local multi-player gaming needs met in much more popular and non-platform exclusive games… double sigh. They went back to Halo to try out the lonely single player campaign that interestingly enough involves working with a squad of computer scripted teammates… Even my youngest son could see the irony in that. Take away split screen co-op and put you in with a squad of scripted teammates. Then they are told that they are to hunt down their beloved Master Chief… What? At one point my son wondered if he just let himself die, if he could continue the rest of the story as Master Chief. No such luck, you are forced to play as a guy that you want to see loose. Those are the 3 primary reasons why my kids were so disappointed with this broken game. No, I would not recommend this to a friend. Please try again later. No Split Screen. How can this game not have a split screen? Playing with family is one of the coolest aspects. This is my worst purchase for the year! 343 Studios should not be allowed to make games because they don't understand why they are fun. No, I would not recommend this to a friend. Please try again later. Disappointing. I was expecting more since hearing so much about this game. Same game play, graphics, and story line. The game just didn't feel new, if your a big fan of the Halo series and can't wait for the price to come down, by all means, buy it. I wish I would have waited. it's nothing special in my opinion. Xbox One X Significantly Improves Halo 5: Guardians Visual Quality, Full 4K 60FPS Capable. Guardians of the Xbox One X. Last updated by Michael Higham on November 15, 2017 at 2:45PM. Halo 5: Guardians was a marquee Xbox One game when it released back in 2015, but it has come back into the conversation as one of the platform's highlights with its Xbox One X enhancements. As they always do, Eurogamer's Digital Foundry did a full-fledged analysis on how the games runs, from its resolution and visual effects to how the framerate holds up. The game uses dynamic resolution scaling to make sure it maintains a consistent, silky-smooth 60 frames per second. Unfortunately, this meant sub-1080p resolution (sometimes as low as 810p) on the original Xbox One during most scenarios. The result was an often blurry image that obscured the finer details in the game. However, the Xbox One X enhancement negates most of that compromise. While Halo 5 does hit full 4K (2160p), dynamic resolution means the game won't run a constant resolution since the target framerate remains 60 FPS. However, author John Linneman says, "Halo 5 does a much better job in sticking closer to its optimal pixel count, with smaller skirmishes and less crowded areas all delivering native 4K." The game adjusts the pixel counts of the X and Y axes individually, and Digital Foundry was able to record resolutions like 2816x1584 and 3360x1890. An oddity between the patched and unpatched versions of Halo 5 on the Xbox One X was also pointed out. The console has the ability to implement anisotropic filtering on its own, and when the game is unpatched, the One X does this. You can read our full breakdown of anisotropic filtering, but it essentially makes angled surfaces and textures in the distance much clearer. Dynamic resolution allows the game to run a constant 1080p when unpatched since the console has enough power. But with the 4K enhancement patch, anisotropic filtering is dropped, likely due to GPU resources focused on rending the highest resolution possible. There are a handful of other things to note about Halo 5. Shadows are essentially untouched and have an odd-looking pop-in effect. A few FPS hitches occur due to loading assets during transitions in some sections, and it's a bit more prominent when running the game off an external drive. Those with 1080p displays will get supersampling, which downscales a high-resolution image for a finer image that helps eliminate jagged edges. If you want the full breakdown of how Halo 5: Guardians runs on the Xbox One X, you can read through Digital Foundry's full analysis or watch their video below. And if you haven't played the game yet but thinking about jumping in, check out our Halo 5 review in which GameSpot's own Mike Mahardy awarded it an 8/10 when it originally released in 2015.

The Xbox received a much needed boost with the release on the Xbox One X this year. The console's successes have varied, but this year in particular was a big step in the right direction. Part of this can be attributed to the arrival of Xbox One X, currently the most powerful console on the market. In theory, it will be the best way to play cross-platform games. It's this forward-thinking that has given Microsoft an edge over its competition--despite its short list of console exclusives. On the other hand, 2017 also yielded an array of fantastic indie games for Xbox One, further rounding out its lineup of first-party and third-party releases. The Xbox One offers solid experiences that are often made even better by high-end hardware. In no particular order, here are our picks for the best Xbox One games of 2017. Assassin's Creed Origins. After seven years worth of annual releases, it's understandable that people grew fatigued with the Assassin's Creed franchise. However, Assassin's Creed Origins quells doubts and concerns over the series' future by making good on the promise of revitalizing the franchise. Taking form now as an action-RPG, it benefits from expanded stealth and combat mechanics, offering more depth and nuance than its predecessors. Its protagonist Bayek is one of the series' best, possessing kindness and compassion that make him instantly likable, but he's also a morally conflicted character with a tragic past that's easy to empathize with. While Origins maintains the series tradition of period-piece settings and conspiracy theory narratives that made past entries so engrossing, it also reinvigorates the formula with new ideas. The game organically shifts progression through a multitude of activities you discover while navigating a stunning depiction of Ptolemaic Egypt. No longer do you climb towers to unlock a checklist of simplistic tasks; instead, each quest you take on offers narrative context that shines light onto the state of the world, displaying the time-period's myriad injustices or simply showing you a heartfelt encounter between Bayek and his loved ones. Origins is one of the best open-world adventure games on Xbox One this year, offering an experience that'll keep you hooked for hundreds of hours. It's also the best version of the game on consoles, as it performs and looks best on Xbox One X compared to PS4 Pro. If you haven't picked it up, Origins is well worth your time on Xbox One, regardless of whether you're a hardcore fan of Assassin's Creed or not. If a game was made in the 1930s, what would it look like? The answer is: Cuphead. Developer Studio MDHR's creation brings together a wealth of ideas and mechanics that feel completely at home with one another. The game's hand-drawn animation and watercolor backgrounds bring to life a visual style that is both completely unique to video games and executed flawlessly. From the moment the opening title rolls, Cuphead envelops you in its world, one whose authenticity never lets up for a second. But Cuphead is more than just a fancy, well-drawn exterior. The game is an ode to the run-and-gun shooter genre and to classic video games in general, with homages to series like Mega Man, Contra, and Street Fighter. Cuphead's two-dozen-plus bosses not only fill the screen with hazards and obstacles, but also with personality, constantly offering challenges that excite just as much as they frustrate. You're encouraged to get better, though, and eventually overcome its toughest levels. Cuphead is a game that deserves to be seen and played by everyone. Backed by a fully orchestrated jazz soundtrack that you'll catch yourself humming for weeks to come, Cuphead grabs hold of you with its beautiful and infectiously cartoony world, and hopes you never leave it. Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus. Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus never lets you forget who you're fighting, and why. Nazi brutality is on full display, from the blown-out, irradiated remains of Manhattan to each of the characters, who all carry mental scars if not physical ones. The far-future technology of the Nazi regime is exhilarating to partake in--high-powered laser weapons are exciting to use, after all--but it’s also a grotesque display of their ruthless subjugation of all corners of the world. That said, a tongue-in-cheek tone reminiscent of Inglorious Basterds strikes the right balance with the game’s incredibly heavy subject matter. The New Colossus has a completely bonkers storyline, and it’s elevated by satisfying Nazi-killing action and a self awareness of its own dark humor. It also manages to make combat exciting without becoming a power fantasy--it’s straight-up difficult, and its mechanical, heavily armored enemies can seem impossible to take down at times. But regardless of whether you take a stealthy or guns-blazing approach, you’ll be rewarded with a thrilling fight once you do emerge victorious. The most memorable thing about The New Colossus, though, is its direction. Carefully choreographed cutscenes give more gravity to an already great cast of characters, and the timing of specific moments (all spoilers) makes them all the more impactful. Wolfenstein's tense gameplay elevates this further by giving you the power to truly resist--and come out of each battle ready for another fight. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard marks a return to form for Capcom, which reconnected with its survival horror roots in 2017 to deliver a Resident Evil that is both modern and faithful to the series' legacy. The game casts aside the third-person perspective for first-person, and in doing so, ratchets up the nerve-wracking tension throughout the campaign. Crucially, however, it leans on the genre pillars that it both established and popularised; bullets and healing items are in short supply, and enemies require strategy and a steady hand to take down. From the early moments of breathlessly running around the Baker home, hoping and praying not to cross paths with Jack, the psychotic patriarch of the family, to the nail-biting cat and mouse game in Marguerite's bug-infested cabin, and the intense fight for survival at the end, Resident Evil 7 is edge-of-your-seat gaming at its finest. What Remains of Edith Finch. In What Remains of Edith Finch, you play titular character Edith Finch as she explores her family's old and mysterious mansion. Ever since her ancestors arrived in America from Norway in the 1930s, there's been a rumor that suggests the Finch family tree is cursed, leading to many strange and unfortunate deaths. As you explore the various rooms within the large estate and read old notes from your fallen relatives, the game flashes back and allows you to play out their last moments. What makes What Remains of Edith Finch so powerful is that it does an excellent job tapping into the commonalities of belonging to a family. Who hasn't lost a loved one in life? Seeing how Edith's aunts, uncles, and siblings pass away can be heartbreaking, but these little story vignettes are also wildly imaginative and whimsical. Seeing a hungry little girl eat poisoned berries only to experience hallucinations that lead to her untimely death is both sad and fantastical. Reliving your brother's last moments as he overcomes depression while daydreaming on the job at a fish factory is another haunting, yet beautiful experience. Each vignette in the game is distinct and amounts to short-but-sweet modern-day fairytales. It helps that the game is tied together by wonderful voice acting and meticulously detailed environments that further bolster the story's eerie events.
