Should You Buy a Kinect For Your Xbox One? What Does It Even Do? When Microsoft first announced the Xbox One, the Kinect was an “essential” part of the console. In fact, the Xbox One wouldn’t even function unless the Kinect was plugged in. That’s changed, however–today, the most popular Xbox One bundles don’t even include a Kinect. Microsoft is still selling Xbox One bundles that include a Kinect, and you can buy a Kinect separately and plug it into your Xbox One if you didn’t buy one at first. Here’s what exactly the Kinect offers, so you can make your own decision. How Much Does a Kinect Cost? Before we get too into features, let’s look at pricing. You can buy the Xbox One in several bundles. You can currently get an Xbox One bundle for about $300 with a game or a few games. Or, you could instead pay $350 for an Xbox One bundle that comes with a Kinect, but it just includes a few simple Kinect games. The difference is $50, but–if you can get a game you’d be happy to pay full retail price for bundled with your Xbox One–the difference might really be more like $100. That makes sense, as you can also purchase the Kinect separately for $100. So you don’t necessarily need to make this decision when you buy the console. You can buy a Kinect separately later and connect it to your Xbox One to get the Kinect features. There Are Some Kinect-Enabled Games, But Not Many. The number one feature you’ll probably care about is motion-controlled gaming in games and other apps. However, there aren’t actually many games that make use of this feature. That’s no real surprise, as game developers can’t rely on Xbox One users having a Kinect anymore. To reach a wider audience, they need to create games and apps that don’t require the Kinect. Games like Dance Central Spotlight , Kinect Sports Rivals , and Zoo Tycoon allow you to dance, play sports, and play with animals by moving around and using arm motions–a bit like Nintendo’s Wii, but more precise. There’s also an Xbox Fitness app that allows you to work out with your Xbox One’s Kinect camera tracking our workout. Microsoft wants you to be more than four feet and seven inches from the camera if you’re playing solo, or more than six feet back if you’re playing with someone else. Keep these size recommendations in mind. If you have a smaller gameplay area, this may not work for you. The Kinect is far from useless, and you can certainly play a few games with it. But you won’t find any big-budget games that really take advantage of the Kinect. Ryse , for example, once required a Kinect, but now only uses the Kinect for a few voice commands you can also press buttons on your controller to perform. Voice Commands Require a Kinect, For Now. The Kinect also enables voice commands on your Xbox One console. Say “Xbox, On” to turn on your Xbox One while it’s in Instant-On mode, for example. You can then speak to your Xbox One with a wide variety of voice commands to launch apps, navigate the interface, and even switch between TV channels, if you’ve set that up. Unlike with the PlayStation 4, there’s no way to use voice commands with a headset. You need the Kinect and its integrated microphone to provide voice commands. However, Microsoft is currently working on bringing Cortana to the Xbox One. Cortana will work with headsets, which may mean more Xbox One voice commands will work with headsets soon. Gesture Controls on the Dashboard Are Already Gone. The original Xbox One dashboard allowed you to control the Xbox One dashboard with hand gestures. You could wave your hand to the left or right to move around. However, this feature was removed when Microsoft moved to the new dashboard. “Usage was very, very low,” explained Microsoft’s Mike Ybarra. TV Features Require a Kinect, if You Care About That. If you want to set up your Xbox One to watch TV–cable, satellite, or even free over-the-air (OTA) TV with an antenna–you may want a Kinect. The Kinect hardware is used to send infrared (IR) signals to your cable or satellite box, TV, and sound system. This allows your Xbox One to switch between channels, turn your hardware on and off, and control volume levels. The Xbox One essentially functions as a glorified remote control, sending the same IR signals your existing remote control does. You can even control these functions using voice commands. Of course, if you don’t care about watching live TV on your Xbox One, this doesn’t really matter. Automatic Login Is a Nice Little Feature. The Kinect also enables a nice “automatic sign-in” feature. When you sit down to use your Xbox One, the camera can recognize who you are and sign you in with the appropriate Xbox One profile. If there are multiple people who share your Xbox One, this is a neat little feature. You’ll be prompted to set it up each time you add a user account to your Xbox One. Of course, this is only a small time saver–you can always just select a user account when you turn on your Xbox One controller. It only takes a few seconds. Whether these features are worth the extra money is up to you. But the Kinect isn’t an essential part of the Xbox One anymore. In fact, it’s likely very few upcoming games will include Kinect support at all. Features like Cortana are being decoupled from the Kinect so more Xbox One owners can use them. It’s unlikely we’ll see any big Kinect features arrive with Microsoft so focused on the many Xbox One owners without a Kinect. Chris Hoffman is a technology writer and all-around computer geek. Xbox One Standalone Kinect Sensor Available in October. Since we announced the availability of a new Xbox One console option for $399, we have been excited by the response from fans. While we’ve seen our Xbox One sales double since the new Xbox One option became available, we have also seen increased demand for Xbox One with Kinect. We’re excited to offer you more choices for purchasing Xbox One – with Kinect, without Kinect for $399, bundled with games like Madden NFL 15 or Sunset Overdrive , or by adding the standalone Kinect sensor at a later date. It’s a great time to choose which Xbox One option works best for you as we look toward the exciting new game launches coming in the months ahead. Is a Kinect for Xbox One Worth the Money? When the Xbox One debuted in November 2013, you couldn’t buy it without a Kinect sensor in the box. Microsoft billed the Kinect as an integral part of the Xbox One system and assured customers it would be used in all sorts of interesting ways. Things have changed a lot since those days. The PlayStation 4 took an early lead in console sales, thanks in part because it cost $100 less than the Xbox One with Kinect. Microsoft took a cold, honest look in the mirror and decided it needed to match the PS4’s price to become a contender, so it began offering a version of Xbox One without Kinect. That brings us to today. Potential Xbox One customers are now faced with a choice: Buy a console with Kinect for $450, or buy a Kinect-free console for $350. It can be a tough decision, but we’ll look at the pros and cons and see if the Kinect for Xbox One is worth the cost. What does the Kinect do? Like a game controller, the Kinect is an input device for the Xbox One. It can be used to identify who’s playing the Xbox One, to sense the position of your body to control things on the screen, and to listen and react to voice commands. If you buy an Xbox One with a Kinect bundled in, it adds $100 to the price of the console. If you buy a Kinect for Xbox One separately, it costs $150. That means if you haven’t bought an Xbox One yet, it would be wise to make the decision before you buy the console. It also means that the device is not cheap. Kinect games. For many people, the value of the Kinect comes from the games with which it’s compatible. Here are some of the standout games released so far that use the Kinect as their primary input device. Judging by those scores, it’s not exactly a parade of classics! But if you want to use the Xbox One as a part of your workout routine, a Kinect will go a long way toward helping you achieve that goal. Some other games use the Kinect as an optional input device, but it’s mostly limited to voice commands that you can also implement using a controller. Other considerations. Space in your room – One important consideration when thinking about buying a Kinect is whether you have enough space for it. Playing games using the Kinect means you have to stand far enough away from the device that it can “see” your entire body, and that you have enough room to flail your limbs as required by Kinect-compatible games. Microsoft suggests standing at least 4 feet, 7 inches from the Kinect for single-player games, and 6 feet away for multiplayer games. If your gaming space can’t accommodate those minimum requirements, you should probably hold off on buying a Kinect. Navigating the UI – As it stands now, the Xbox One’s user interface (UI) was designed to be used with the Kinect. It lets you launch apps, “snap” apps, and record snippets of gameplay just by uttering a few words. Without a Kinect, doing those things takes more time, and requires you to pick up the controller. On the other hand, since unbundling the Kinect in 2014, Microsoft has been using its monthly software updates to make the UI more controller-friendly. Xbox One as entertainment hub – If you plan to use the Xbox One as the centerpiece of your entertainment setup, you’ll want to consider buying a Kinect. The Kinect is used to send signals to your cable box, TV, and receiver. If you don’t have a Kinect, you’ll have to keep those remotes handy. Future prospects. Here’s some bad news. Originally, Microsoft promised developers that everyone with an Xbox One would have a Kinect. That was a great incentive for game makers to incorporate Kinect functionality in their games. Now that Microsoft has unbundled the Kinect, developers can no longer assume players have the device, which removes most of the incentive for developers to make use of it. The Kinect has effectively become an expensive add-on, which makes it very likely that fewer games will use Kinect in the future. Bottom line. If you have a specific reason to want a Kinect, like you want to incorporate the Xbox One into your workout routine, or you want to be able to navigate the console’s user interface using your voice, then you’ll get plenty of use from the device. But if your goal is to use it as an input device to play games, you might want to hold off. Very few upcoming Xbox One games will use the Kinect in any significant way. In all likelihood, the Kinect for Xbox One will become ever less necessary, just as the original Kinect did for Xbox 360. The Kinect is great for a few specific uses. But in today’s Xbox One gaming landscape, it’s definitely not essential. Kinect for Xbox One. OUT OF STOCK. Voice Commands. Experience greater convenience and control with Kinect for Xbox One. Navigate your console without lifting a finger. Instantly capture screenshots and game clips. And change TV channels without ever searching for the remote. Cortana comes to Xbox One. Everything you love about Cortana on your Windows 10 devices is now on Xbox One. Use "Hey Cortana. " to call up commands. You can even configure your Xbox One to turn on other devices, like your TV, audio/video receiver, and cable/satellite receiver. Automatic Recognition. Kinect eliminates the need to manually switch or sign into your Xbox account. Be recognized and signed-in automatically when turning on your console, so you can spend more time gaming. Connect with Skype and Twitch. With its 1080p HD camera, Kinect delivers a highly detailed picture, and its microphone array picks out your voice above any other sound in the room, so no one will ever miss a beat. You can even broadcast your gameplay live with picture-in-picture through Twitch. The best Xbox One experience is with Kinect. Additional Accessories. Xbox Design Lab. Microsoft has ended its program of providing free USB adapters to Xbox One Kinect owners who purchase an Xbox One S. The Xbox One S debuted in August 2016, more than two years after Microsoft unbundled the Kinect from the original Xbox One. The slimmed-down white console does not include a Kinect port. People who want to connect a Kinect to the Xbox One S must use an accessory known as the Kinect Adapter, which allows the Kinect to be hooked up to one of the system’s USB ports. Microsoft had been offering the opportunity to get a free adapter with the purchase of an Xbox One S to customers who already owned an Xbox One and a Kinect. These customers had to register their devices with the company, and would then receive a complimentary adapter. In a video timed with the release of the Xbox One S in August, Microsoft noted that this offer would run “for a limited time.” The promotion is now over, according to the Xbox Support website and multiple reports from users. The Kinect page on the support site says the offer ended “in March 2017”; a reader emailed Polygon today to say that they recently called Microsoft to ask about the deal, and were told that the company had shut it down about two weeks ago. It doesn’t seem like Microsoft gave any advance notice of an end date — as of March 9, the Xbox Support site made no mention of the imminent closure of the program. Kinect owners who purchase an Xbox One S must now buy the Kinect Adapter separately; it currently retails for $39.99. Microsoft told Polygon at E3 2016 that, sometime after the launch of the Xbox One S, the company would begin including the Kinect Adapter with the stand-alone Kinect sensor, which costs $99.99. However, it appears that Microsoft never actually did that — a number of user reviews on the Microsoft Store listings for both products come from people who were dismayed when they realized they’d have to get the adapter separately. “Great product just make sure you purchase adaptor for Xbox One S it does not come with nor does Microsoft tell you,” said Kinect reviewer Maddog2811, one of the few people who did not downgrade their star rating because of the adapter’s absence. Indeed, the Kinect product page does not mention the fact that the device requires the USB adapter for use with an Xbox One S. We’ve reached out to Microsoft for comment, and will update this article with any information we receive. Update: A Microsoft representative confirmed the end of the program to Polygon with the following statement: “The Xbox Kinect Adapter program was a limited-time offer, in tandem with the launch of Xbox One S in August 2016, to ensure that gamers who own a Kinect for Xbox One could seamlessly enjoy all the same Kinect benefits on the Xbox One S via a free adapter. While the Xbox Kinect Adapter program is no longer being offered, the adapter is available for purchase at participating retailers, including Microsoft Store.” Update (Jan. 2, 2018): Microsoft confirmed to Polygon that it is no longer manufacturing the Kinect Adapter, leaving Kinect owners who buy an Xbox One S or Xbox One S out in the cold. Expect prices on the secondary market — which are already exorbitant — to stay high as the product becomes more and more rare. Xbox One S. Buy xbox one kinect separately

Microsoft released a standalone Xbox One and sees future purchases of a standalone Kinect. Standalone Kinect sensors for the Xbox One will be available to purchase in October for $150, Microsoft announced today. It will launch on October 7. The Kinect-free Xbox One became available on June 9 for $400, compared to the Xbox One and Kinect bundle at $500. The cheaper price helped to double sales of the console in the U.S., competing with Sony's PS4 at $400. The difference stands at $100, but buying the Kinect sensor separately from the Xbox One costs $150. It will include Dance Central Spotlight with 10 songs. In May when Microsoft announced it would sell a Kinect-free Xbox One, it noted that in the future it would also sell Kinect sensors separately for Xbox One owners who don't want Kinect at this point but may want it later on when there are more games that use it. Dance Central is indeed one of the more popular series making use of the Kinect. The Kinect sensor allows players to interact with games and the Xbox One's operating system via gestures and voice commands. Harmonix's games rely on the Kinect peripheral, and Microsoft initially billed the Kinect sensor as an integral part of the Xbox One. However, the price of the Xbox One made it hard to compete with the PS4. Now the option exists for people to buy the console with or without the Kinect, and to have the option of picking up the Kinect later on. I don't get why they would charge $50 more on this piece of hardware.. I wonder if their doing this to make the kinect bundle seem like more of a deal. Or if they just want to see what they can get away with. The cost of the kinect 2 is supposed to be nearly as much as the XBO itself. What we should be asking is why dropping the kinect 2 from the bundle only dropped the XBO price by $100 when the XBO and Kinect 2 already cost less than $500 to make. A little bit of column A, a little bit of column B. Probably a bit of the former, probably also a bit of having a massive oversupply of Kinect MK2s having signed contracts and placed orders on the assumption that every Xbone would ship with one. If you sell even ten percent of them, that's still more income than throwing them all in a skip, it also wouldn't be the first time recent memory year that Microsoft have massively over ordered hardware and then tried to sell it over price. Of course it could also be to make it sound like a deal when it hits Gamestop shelves at $100 'marked down' from $150 a month after initial release. Yeah. prolly but they forget the one rule. If you sell something no one wants for a high price you will make 0 sales. All they've done is make kinect games cost an extra $150. any kinect games out there worth plunking down an extra $150 or heck even worth the $100 price difference between the the two x-boxes? Any? ANy kinect games worth $100+ Nope? Guess what Ms you just killed your kinect. Devs will now have more reasons not to develop anything for it. But. but. nobody wants the bloody thing! On the other hand, not buying a Kinect saves you Ј100. hurry, buy one from ebay for $50 before the sellers find out. So. That's $50 for packaging and transport and stuff? They do try so very hard. So very hard. The cost of the kinect 2 is supposed to be nearly as much as the XBO itself. What we should be asking is why dropping the kinect 2 from the bundle only dropped the XBO price by $100 when the XBO and Kinect 2 already cost less than $500 to make. I'm tentatively calling that the Microsoft "Idiot Tax" . . That and they're probably comfortable with the Kinect-free Xbone's target price vs the PS4. Isn't that one of the claims that Microsoft made shortly after the reveal event? Along with the ones like the Kinect and the online system being so totally and utterly inseparable from the system that even thinking about it was unconscionable? I'm going to file that claim with others under 'B' for blatant lies . Because they force feed you Dance Central with it. At least it's not as bad as the PC edition which is $200 and that one is bare bones. Or you can buy a used (as in taken out of the box, maybe checked out in action by the owner for an hour, and put right back into the box) one online from the millions of xbone owners who don't give -2 flying fucks about the thing. If fact, maybe MS would have been smart to stop making them as soon as they realized it flopped, started a buy back program, and sold those as "preowned" for a little profit or at a break even price to ensure the few people who have to play the latest Dance Central game the necessary hardware. Because they are Microsoft, that's why. There is always someone that will pay them for the crap they pull. Like all the sheep last gen that defended that it was BETTER do pay $50 bucks on a mandatory Gold Subscription to play online than to use the "inferior" free service on the PSN. They're charging $50 more because when mom/dad/uncle/aunt/grandma/grandpa do the math in their head, they'll see getting the whole package together for little Timmy's Christmas will be $50 cheaper in the long run. Because you know how little Timmy is. As soon as he gets that Xbox One, he'll want that Kinect too, and he'll use all that nasty language he's uses when he's playing Call of Duty until he gets one. Iґm going to guess that itґs in order to make the original $500 dollar bundle seem more appealing to potential buyers. A person walking into a store would compare the bundled and unbundled versions and figure that theyґre saving 50 bucks on the whole if they buy the x1 with the Kinect already included. When someone here says about buying a Kinect separately, do they mean intentionally? As was noted previously, the number is double the previous month, where sales were down. It's more than likely the "doubling" effect came from people waiting to buy afterwards, not a significant increase in demand. Barring, of course, something new not covered in the linked article. It's more likely that they're charging fifty bucks extra on the Xbone. Remember, the Kinect was a significant portion of the Bone's cost. Not buying it leaves me where I already was. Although, I suppose that makes me somewhat happier. I guess MS still isn't giving up on the kinect. The only reason I can think of for them charging $50 extra is to get people to the the XbOne and kinect bundle is a better deal. However, those who want a kinect will just buy the bundle and those who don't will just buy the standalone console. No one is really going to buy the kinect separate. Microsoft has really really ruined this technology for everyone. I mean their miss handling of this and complete failure to present this in a way that anyone could possibly want is completely their fault on a number of levels and the perception of this current attempt at releasing this hardware is just another fine example of that. I understand the pricing actually, and they probably need to sell it at this price based on projected cost and sales, but on the other hand I completely understand how people are going to feel ripped off, because they created this aura around themselves, where all people think of when they see the name Microsoft is "how is this company gonna try to pinch every penny out of me and tell me its for my own good." or "we have to screw you because you ungrateful troglodytes didn't give us a choice." I suspect one day this product will lay the groundwork for the technology of the future, but I wish Microsoft would re-evaluate it's strategy so that we can stop looking at them like they're trying to set us on fire. Hard to believe the only reason I bought a 360 was the Limited Edition Star Wars model. It came with a Kinect and I haven't even unwrapped it yet. So yeah I have a Kinect that hasn't been used in 2 years. I bet Microsoft never thought that would happen. Regardless of their reasons, makes sense: Option A (No Kinect) = What you want, reasonable price. Option B (Kinect Only) = Overpriced, probably wouldn't get it so don't care. Option C (+ Kinect) = Expensive, but a better deal than A or B individually. Standard marketing ploy, make C look like a sweet deal, even if the only thing making it a deal is something people wouldn't have otherwise purchased in the first place. Tends to work well. I would buy kinect if they paid me 150. wait, you mean they want me to pay? why would i pay to haul trash into my house? "Choices for consumers, best thing for Xbox, and we gon' win this generation, etc" If nobody wanted the damned thing for $100, why would people want it for $150?! I kinda get that they probably want to make the bundle look like a deal, but you can't do that retroactively like this. If people didn't want it before, how is learning that they could sell it for far more going convince people to buy the 'bundle?' Yeah, it's times like these why I remember doubting that there will be another console from microsoft after this.
